Paul, I think that you'll find that the K2 is the rig used the most
different ways because it's capable of the most different modes. And with
different applications and different circumstances, it lends itself to the
most different "enhancements" and "improvements".
To be sure, many of those improvements have risen to the level of permanent
changes to the rig, but the K2 always did meet all of its published
specifications.
What you're seeing is an evolutionary "improvement of the breed". Every K2
from the late pre-production "FT" units to the most recent one sold is
capable of the same performance today. With other makes of rigs, those
owners would have had to live with the performance of the original rig or
"upgrade" by buying a new one!
All of those improvements come to the K2 owner for the price of the original
rig plus a little spare change for the occasional mod kit if the junque box
doesn't come up with the required parts.
Problems? I'd hardly say that investing a little time in old S/N 1289 built
in 2000 so it performs just as well as the latest K2 sold today is a
"problem". I'd say that's a FEATURE!
What's more, Elecraft encourages tinkering to make it better. Try that on
your factory-built box without voiding the warranty.
