noise on SSB modulation

DK5EW
Hi all,
I use at my K3 a HEIL PRO SET ELITE "IC", I had this as I use it at my
old ICOM IC-275H as well.
Now I recognised that I have a small noise on modulation like a fan that
gives me some power output when I just push PTT.
OK I have in my shack 2 additional fans for cooling the PA so I switched
them of. The noise is lower but still there.
and there are no other noise sources. So my setting for the HEIL headset
are:
- MIC: 25
- CMR: 25
- MIC SEL: RP + HIGH BIAS
- MIC+LIN: OFF
Do you have any idea if I can change setting to cancel that noise ?
I can not believe that the microphone is that sensitive to pick up all
little noises around.
best regards Erwin/DK5EW

Re: noise on SSB modulation

It is not a fan, it is RF or other noise getting back into the mic
circuit.  I had the same problem.  Check the two mods on the Elecraft K3
Enhancements and Application Notes page.  Look for Older K3 Mods >
"Front Panel Microphone" and "Improving the Immunity of the real panel
RS232 and audio connectors" to see if they apply to your rig's serial
number.  Do both to solve your problem.

Try reducing your compression setting.  I get a noise at 25 also.

Re: noise on SSB modulation

If you are using any kind of rig control with your computer (and
therefore have a shield connection between the K3 and the computer, such
as via an RS-232 cable), make sure the chassis of your K3 is securely
bonded to the chassis of the computer with a very short length of large
gauge wire or section of shielded braid.  I had to go down to less than
a foot of RG-8 shielded braid to eliminate all hum on my signal.

Hi all,
I did manage it now by reducing mic and comp so its fine now.
All settings was to much with 25 - now it is 10/15 with the HEIL.
Thanks for fast answer - a good reflector !
I like it !;-)

This occurs when CMP and MIC settings are very high, while TX Gate is
set too low.

Maybe an increase in TX Gate level and reducing MIC and/or CMP will cure
the other problem with the transverter.

Re: noise on SSB modulation

I honestly don't know, since I think it would depend on how
conscientious the laptop manufacturer was handling ground issues.  There
may not be any assurance that signal grounds are common with things like
the switching power supply ground, etc.

I would think that it's worth a try, though.

Re: noise on SSB modulation

Jim Brown-10
That works with Thinkpads of the T2x and T4x vintage.  I suspect that it
works with many others. I've been doing this for years to eliminate
hum/buzz issues that result from leakage current from the AC power system.
