om2500a

chris Pickett
Hi Folks,
I have recently purchased the OM2500A amplifier but am confused about the
lead I need to make up
for connection to the amplifier.
The OM Amp has a 15way D 2 row connector and the Elecraft K3 has a 15way D 3
row connector. I have the screened cable and the correct plugs etc but am
unsure of the terminology used in the two manuals as to what wires go where,
and as you can imagine, am a little worried about how to connect them.

The OM Power pin out is as follows:

1:ALC Out
2:NC
3:Inhibit Control Voltage
4:TX Inhibit for Yaesu and Elecraft - this supersedes ALC output
5:NC
6:Key Out
7:NC
8:Key in
9:-
15:Ground

I have not listed the pin out of the K3 as I assume anyone with a common
interest will have the manual.

I would be most grateful if someone would Elmer me here because 232 coms is
simple provided the terminology used is the same. Elecraft us a whole
different list of Pin outs on their socket on the back of the K3, and I
don't want to get it wrong.

If anyone would like to help me off-list my e-mail address is
[hidden email]

Thanks for reading and hopefully helping,

best of 73
Chris

Hi Chris,

Am no expert (have no k3 and no om2500a)  but I was courious and checked both manuals.
My understanding is that you (or Elecraft) don't "want" the ALC and the keying of the amp is not done via Elecraft's PIN 10.

So, you would key the amp via the Keyout jack of the K3, connect amp's pin 4 to Elecraft's Pin 7 (tx inh), amp's pin15 to Elecraft's pin 5 (gnd) and that's it?.

You will have to turn on the tx inh in the menu of the K3.

Maybe that is identical to your own guess or someone on the list can confirm this.

Greetings

Ralf, DL6OAP

Just noticed that OMPower recommend using the ALC if duty cycle is high (but don't have it in their illustration)
So, better connect amps pin 1 and k3's pin 15 (ALC) and turn on ext alc in K3's menu...

Re: om2500a

Josh Fiden
From OM Power manual: "We only recommend using ALC feature while
operating RTTY, FM and other 100% duty modes."

I don't think they are recommending to use ALC for those modes. This
means DON'T use ALC for CW or SSB.

Since the only valid purpose is to reduce drive power in a fault
condition, TX INHIBIT is the correct choice.

Re: om2500a

Hi Josh,

I think you are right, am no native english speaker but I think that is the better way to read it.

In my understanding, the main purpose of the ALC is to reduce the power drive to keep the plate oder grid currents from being driven into the non-linear region in order to prevent non-linear distortions (splatter, harmonics).

Maybe the levels are such that, with ALC on, the drive power would already be reduced before the max.  output power is reached? This would explain the recommendation (in your reading) if the main limitation is a "thermal" one instead of a "non-linear" one.

Re: om2500a

DL6OAP
There seem to be more than version of the manual around. "Mine" is from "radiomanuals.com" (I think so) and just checked; it doesn't not have the word "only" in the ALC description on page 8.

So, the basic line is NO ALC for ssb,cw...

Actually I hope Chris will show up again because I got an off-the-list respond yesterday from him, and he described another task much more interesting:  he wants to use the automatic features of the amplifier. He uses the rs232 port of amp and K3, but this solution blocks the K3's rs232 and keeps him from using a computer control for the K3 when the amplifer is off. I think, a solution would be a small box that reads the band settings from the K3's ACC jack, converts it into "comport format"  and sends it to the amplifer. Maybe there is a PIC solution for this...
