proposal: why not design a monoband CW/SSB QRP TRX

Chris Wagner-9
In Fall 2002, I had some fun with a K1 and a dipole
which almost touched the grass. A rotten CW beginner,
I had all QSOs on 40 m. 40 m is where the action is,
day and night. Others might favor other bands. But I
would fancy a great monoband transceiver. More than a
decade after the Norcal 40 A, I bet Wayne can amaze us
all again! 72, Chris Hs0zfe

I agree about 40 meters.  I have often said that I could do about 90% of my
operating with my Norcal 40A.  But I disagree about the need for a new 40M
monoband design.  The simple analog design makes it a delight to use.  No
digital quantum jumps in the tuning.  No operation manual or cheat sheet
needed.  The only change for home use would be to use the K2 mixer design
and this would more than double the cost as it involves more than just
subbing a TUF mixer.  Compare the two designs.  The power consumption would
increase considerably.  Mods to customize for user preference are easy.  I
like to use multiturn tuning pots like the K1 uses.
But I still have a K3 on order.

What about a sierra with a 40 meter plug in?

The only thing I don't like about the sierra maybe is
the limited vfo range.

Sometimes the slow CW guys hang out in the old novice
portion of the band, and CW IS allowed anywhere in the band...
I have very fond memories of the novice segments!

I have not had one, but the basic design of the sierra
looks good to me, all it needs is a wide range accurate
vfo maybe.

I must say, I really like analog, I sure hope the K3
acts like an analog radio.

I wouldn't mind seeing an Elecraft 40M SSB/CW rig (since it would
almost certainly be stable enough for PSK31 and AFSK RTTY, too).
But take a look at the MMR-40 from Hendricks QRP Kits.  It can be used
as-is, or with the NorCal FCC-1 or with the FCC-1 and -2 combination.
Or you can use a Small Wonder Labs FreqMite for a frequency readout.

I picked up one within 30 minutes of picking up my K3, since the K3 is
a little large to use for a motorcycle rig, and I want SSB capability.
I'll use the FreqMite, myself.

The Sierra is a CW rig, and I think the request included SSB.
Note that the Cascade, a 20/75M SSB rig, was modified to a 17/40M version,
but it wasn't stable enough for my purposes. (Wow, that was 12 years ago!!)
