Please don't be so hasty in your remarks. The fishing boat I refer to is 103 feet long and has been converted to carry heavy awkward loads unable to use the highway systems. I am the only person who is a HAM on board and I am looking for the best equipment for taking along with me. Because all the long distance equipment they use is high frequency I though I may be able to use a higher frequency band also. In HAM bands of course They have every kind of electronics communications you can imagine. BUT not HAM, When I ask why not I was told HAM was useless except to another HAM operator and is patchy at best. Their main use is Sat Phone, because of the type of cargo they are in constant touch with the base. The going joke is that their new side viewing SONAR is so accurate it can tell the sex of a whale ten miles away, and who would want to know that.
I have moved on from the handheld idea. The best radio in size vs. bands (so far) is the Yeasu 817ND but it only comes at 5 watts and 2.5 watts transmit. Installed a long antenna wire would not tolerated on the vessel. So a whip is a must. Of course the ship is steel and the steel goes up to your waist when outside on the aft deck, I might have a good ground you think. Mike Your email: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As far as marine use goes, only a fool goes to sea in Alaska without a real 25 watt, big antenna, VHF marine radio. 60 miles is way too far for any hand held radio. Hand held radios are great for short range stuff, don't bet your life on one working for 60 miles. If I'm going out of sight of land, I never go without a real HF SSB Marine radio too.... Do Not use a modified ham radio for marine SSB use. The United States Coast Guard are about the most honorable and diligent people I've ever met, they maintain an outstanding radio network all around the state of Alaska. I would never bet my life on hams that might, or might not be listening. The Coast Guard is always there. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
