re attic antennas and ground radials

Richard Haendel
>From the previous discussions, I agree that there is no magic in having low
VSWR across many bands without a tuner or a resistor  buried in the
"matching unit".  However there is a way to have good vertically polarized
radiation without ground radials.  One example of these is the end-fed 1/2
wavelength vertical. If you wish to build one for a single band, there are
several articles compiled within the archives of QST or you can buy one from
PAR electronics.  The cost is less than $60 for the 40 Meter unit and the
cost is even lower for the higher band units.  For reviews see e-ham  at
http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/3632 .

The single band version can handle 100 watts.  The multiband version is only
QRP rated at 20 watts. Re the antenna arrangement, it doesn't have to be
perfectly straight nor perfectly vertical to work well.  Of course the
pattern will change.  The matching is nothing more than a tuned circuit plus
a coupling loop, no resistors !!.  All 1/2 wave end fed antennas work quite
well either purchased or home made.  Good luck on building your own.!!
