rise/fall time: blind-sided

DOUGLAS ZWIEBEL
>From the FAQ

[snip]
Can the user adjust the rise and fall time on CW?  If yes, what are the steps?

The CW settings have been optimized at the factory and will not be
adjustable.  IF a need presents itself to make them adjustable it can
be done in a future firmware revision.
[end snip]

Wow...when did this happen?

The answer used to be YES.  While I"m sure the rise/fall times are
good (as reported by ZV and others, but questioned by EKM), I am
totally surprised that something changed in the FAQ "without
notification."  Or did I miss it?

Since I had personal (private) email exchanges about this (rise/fall
for cw) and saw the adjustability as a "feature" I liked (but did
suggest that the "low end" for the rise time range was too short and
would be clicky), I feel rather "empty."  Not so much because this
"feature" was dropped, but because I don't know what else was
"changed" on the FAQ.  I never did save an original copy.

Is there a list of "deleted features" from the early FAQs available?

Thanks,
de Doug KR2Q

RE: rise/fall time: blind-sided

IF this changed, it was VERY VERY early on.  I do not remember changing
this, but if I did, it was shortly after the FAQ was first posted.  CW rise
and fall have not been part of the firmware for months.  Elecraft optimised
these settings for best CW performance.

As the FAQ says.  If the need presents itself, the subject will be reviewed
again to put these settings back in the FW.

While FAQ updates were fast and furious following the K3's announcement,
updates recently have been few.  I think the last update I did was to list
the TX INHB pin on the ACCY connector and add the link for the Operating
Tips.

Doug might be getting confused with the changes to the AGC attack
times?  This was made adjustable a short while ago after discussion on
the list.

No, he's correct. According to the Wayback Machine, it was originally
adjustable:

http://web.archive.org/web/20070621195718/http://www.elecraft.com/K3/K3FAQ.htm#CW

but warned that it might change. IMHO, the fixed setting of 5 ms is
ok. The K3's I've heard on cw don't sound too "soft" to my ears, and
are click free.

rise/fall time: blind-sided

Tom Hammond-2
In reply to this post by Ian Maude
Very early-on in the Field test series... LONG before any 'production'
K3s were even considered, there WAS a menu configuration parameter
which allowed the user to vary the CW rise/fall times, by a small
amount. However, it was removed from the menu quite a while ago, in
lieu of a (currently) single fixed setting.

This parameter HAS been discussed within the Field Test group and there
is a possibility (note this word... 'possibility') that rise/fall time
may be added back at a later date, but probably not any time soon...
Wayne has a number of much more important firmware items to address
before this subject is re-addressed.

It's not gong to do much good to beat it (or Wayne) up at this point.
But wait several months, until things slow down a bit, and THEN give
it a shot. It might be considered then.

It strikes me that if a list of such things was made available, and a list of
things that were tried and deemed not to be viable was available for reference,
then the repeated questions might not surface.

For example, Wayne had a brief discussion on this list about a BL3...and
mentioned that it was already designed.  I just found out that while it is
designed it may or may not be produced.  Having that information available
woould have saved me several emails, and the time it took to finally get an
answer.

I believe there are some advertised features trhat are still not
available...having then on a list might thwart some questions.

Gee...if it were on a list as mentioned above, someone with a keen understanding
of the process and Wayn's work load could actually update the entry with a "time
to ask" note.

Yea, I know, it sounds like it might be incorporated into the wiki...I'm sure
the guys handling that project would be more than happy to assist in this type
of thing.
