Last night I was able to set up an SO2R capability using two K3s, two
sound cards, and just COM1 and COM2. There was no need to add an extra two
COM ports. This works with AFSK, but not FSK.
The tricky part is creating two instances of RTTYrite/MMTTY and having
them associated with the proper sound card. You interface radio 1 with one
sound card, and radio 2 with the other sound card (e.g. line in/line out
interface).
Set up your WriteLog contest log as usual for SO2R but use AA5AU's ports
set up (don't assign CW to your LPT, etc.). But, don't select the RTTY
screen, just yet. First, click on the L log entry line to make it active,
and then select the RTTY screen in the contest tab. This will create the
first instance of RTTYrite/MMTTY. Using the RTTYrite (not MMTTY) screen
tabs, go to the middle tab which will open up MMTTY configuration screens.
Go to "misc" and on the left, you'll see "device" with a menu of numbers
-1, 0, 1, etc. Select "0" and hit "OK." Tune in a RTTY station with radio
1 and make sure the waterfall/tuning ellipses are working (shows that
sound card is associated with that radio and screens).
Next, click on the R log entry line, then again "select" a "RTTY Screen"
in the contest tab. This will enable a second instance. This time, when
you go to the MMTTY configuration tab, choose device "1". That should
associate your second sound card with radio 2 and the second set of
RTTYrite/MMTTY screens.
With my set up, I have VOX deselected on both K3s (e.g. it's using PTT)
and in the WriteLog ports screen, I have COM PTT as "yes." This has
eliminated a problem I was having where during RX the VOX would trigger
the radio into TX mode. It may just be a problem in my set up.
As always, make sure your AFSK signal gain is adjusted to just give you
peak power at your setting. If you crank it any more than that, you'll
risk creating spurious junk. After all, you are operating "phone" in a
fashion and cranking up the gain too far will create a mess.
