softrock with K3

George Cortez Jr
Any one have any experience with the softrock and the K3
I just ordered the softrock for K3 and would like some
opinions and experiences with this setup.
What is the good software for use with the K3?

Thanks
on line like everyone else......

And I assume that we'd need a crystal of two or four times the K3's
IF, depending on the softrock model, to use it with the K3.  Any word
on a source for such crystals?

Why buy a new xtal when you can get a Softrock 40 with the correct xtal for
only $11.00?

softrock with K3

In reply to this post by George Cortez Jr
Hi Dave.
There is a Softrock kit specific for the K3 which includes a xtal at
32.7680Mhz, approx 4 times the K3 IF.
The Kit is not expensive around $15 US.
I have one here but with so many jobs I have not yet the time to get it
up and running.
Regards

> Any one have any experience with the softrock and the K3...

PLEASE remember that you *must* have a high-reverse isolation buffer
between the K3 IF OUT jack and the Softrock antenna input.  The Softrock
may have a huge spur at its carrier frequency and its mixer may not
suppress this adequately.  So there is a potential coupling problem
(mixer) and radiation problem (shielding).  The IF out of the K3 does
not have high reverse isolation characteristics, so you need to ensure
you do not couple a signal at the IF *into* the K3 through this connector.

Dave and all,

Tony Parks KB9YIG has a Softrock kit for the K3 IF the crystal is 32.768
MHz - just send Tony $11 (or whatever the latest price is) and you can
have one too.   Tony's email is [hidden email].  He does accept
PayPal or checks or money orders.

I have not built mine yet, so I cannot make any comments.  The softrock
that I currently have attached to the IF of my Icom PCR100 is working
fine - it adds CW and SSB capability to the PCR-100.

You will have to join the Yahoo Sotfrock40 group to download the
documentation and you can join in on the discussion.

We'll have to get some ideas for a simple buffer that will provide
good isolation.  Otherwise before long questions will be popping up
about spurious responses and noise with our new K3s.

Re: softrock with K3

> Any recommendations for a "high-reverse isolation buffer" circuit?

No.

I just want people to be aware that the I.F OUT jack is exactly that:
and I.F. *OUT* jack.  All bets are off if you inject a signal into this
connector.

Keep in mind that the Softrock is a $12-class receiver, not a $500 class
one, so you cannot assume that it has much L.O. suppression at its
antenna jack.  People get so excited by the concept of a cheap receiver
for their PC, and by the "software defined" mantra, that they overlook
the fact that $12 hardware is, after all, $12 hardware.  It *admirably*
serves its purpose of introducing people to what can be done with DSP,
and Tony and associates have done a wonderful thing to make this
available to the Amateur radio community.

But adding a spectrum monitor to the K3 is a systems design exercise,
and you need to be aware of the limitations of the system components,
including the I.F. OUT jack of the K3 :-)

I suggest a careful, thoughtful reading of Larry's notes <
URL:http://www.telepostinc.com/K3pan.html > as he approaches the
addition of a panadapter to his K3.  There are a number of issues which
he addresses.

Lyle kK7P

Dave,

"simple" and "effective" are often antonyms and do not occur together
except in the most simple cases.  Assuring that no signals are
inadvertently injected into the K3 IF OUT jack does not sound like a
simple case.  Bite the bullet and do a good job of isolating no matter
what you use - the performance of your K3 depends on it.  Directly
connecting an $11 piece of equipment to a $1000 piece of equipment and
expecting no adverse consequences is a lot to be expected.
It *can* be done - the devil is in the details.

Re: softrock with K3

Jerry Flanders
Lyle, perhaps you have actually hooked up the softrock "panadaptor"
and found a problem. If so, let us know.

Otherwise, considering that the K3 is using a roofing filter which
should be VERY effective in eliminating any feedthrough from the
softrock's actual LO freq, until somebody actually hooks one up to
the K3 and finds a problem, I continue to hope that no isolation is
required, or that a simple attenuation pad can do the job without
excessive attenuation of the display sigs.

With the standard K3 softrock panadaptor kit that KB9YIG provides,
the LO is at 8.191 kHz and K3 IF is at 8.215, 24 KHz away. The
roofing filters should provide pretty good attenuation at that
"distance". Some phase noise will be present at 8.215, but it may or
may not be negligible.

I will definitely use the panadaptor with the K3 I have on order, and
already have the softrock kit awaiting the build.
