some K2 issues

Lloyd Lachow
Last night, I did the C22 correction using WWV, and
after a couple of tries, it worked like a charm, and
it's very close, if not exact - I'm happy. (yes, I
re-ran CAL PLL, etc., after) Also perfected the
"listening to the lowest sounding background noise"
method for tweaking the BFOs for my filter settings,
and now there's little to no change in the pitch of a
received signal in CW or CW reverse...it worked very
well, was easy to do, and I've begun to see how being
able to switch to CW reverse in the presence of some
types of QRM is a great boon. And, of course, the
received signal is smack in the middle of all my
filter settings.

Two questions: first, when I "ask for" 5W, I get
about 6.2W, both as shown on the K2 display, and on my
WM-2 wattmeter. I need to only "ask for" 4.3W to get
5W out. Is this normal/typical?  I'm guessing the
"asked-for" power level will be closer to the "gotten"
power level when I've installed my KAT2...yes?

Second, yesterday, while playing with/operating my
K2, there was a blinking decimal point after all the
numbers, and before the "c." I was reading through the
manual, also operating, trying to find some reference
to that, but didn't, and noticed at some point that it
had disappeared. What was it?

  Thanks!

LLoyd,

The basic K2 power metering is an RF Probe type and is very dependent on the
load - if it is anything other than 50 ohms pure resistance, the K2 power
indication may be in error.  Even when driving a 50 ohm non-reactive dummy
load, an in-line wattmeter in the path may introduce some reactance and will
cause the K2 to display the power incorrectly.

Yes, the KAT2 has a real wattmeter and once properly calibrated will be as
accurate as the calibration.

  OK...I'm tuning a balanced-fed loop through a ZM-2,
and get pretty close. Both the K2's wattmeter and the
WM-2 wattmeter, which is between the rig and the
tuner, are displaying the same power. Even if
something is causing the K2's display to be off, would
that also affect the WM-2's reading? Should the WM-2
be after the tuner? Would the K2 be more accurate with
the WM-2 gone? How would I know?
