One good reason is so that we can call on the reserve of power and floor-board it, getting out of the way of that 10 ton truck that is bearing down on us...This is a good reason for NOT putting governors on automobiles as some have suggested...

Maybe the high numbers are to accomodate conversion to Kilometers/hour
