Be careful of the two screws in the top middle of the side plates. They screw into the heat sink and it is easily stripped. 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2007 CQP Oct 6-7 - www.cqp.org _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. From: Fred Jensen <[hidden email]> Takes me about 5 mins ... 3 to find the phillips screwdriver, and 2 to change the tops. Be careful of the two screws in the top middle of the side plates. They screw into the heat sink and it is easily stripped. It's very easy to actually drill and tap the heat sink from the side, then use a 1/2" length 4-40 screw at that location. As shipped, you're using a short #5 screw into the slot in the heatsink, and it strips very easily. 73, doug _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. George,
It takes 2 to 3 minutes depending on how fast you can take out 6 screws, disconnect 4 cables, connect the 1 to 4 cables from the QRP top and re-insert the 6 screws. If you do not want to do that amount of effort or will be making the change often, it is easy to mount the KPA100 in an EC2 enclosure (or mount it with the KAT100-2. If you go that route, you will need a KIO2 option installed in the bse K2 - but there will only be 2 cables to remove from the back of the K2 to separate the external amp from the QRP K2. 73, Don W3FPR > -----Original Message----- > > Hi > After much hemming an hawing I just ordered the pa for the K2 > How hard is it to switch out tops for qrp and qro operation? > > Thanks > George > NE2I K2#4801 > -- No virus found in this outgoing message. When I go out into the field I take off the amplifier top and replace it
with the original top with its ATU. Upon return from the field I replace the amplifier top but do not put in those side screws. Since they are not really necessary (the heat sink is stiff enough) I have not put them in after I first built the amp. There were stories running around of folks using larger and large screws to allow for stripping. I experimented with leaving them out entirely and have not had any problems since. Well, other than something similar to Fred's hidden Phillips screwdriver; I need to find those screws. My screwdriver is easy to find, the screws take 90% of the cover transfer time! 73, Kevin.
