Thanks to the many Elecrafters who have given thoughtful, knowledgeable and thorough replies to my questions. Collectively, you have answered all three of my questions, and also proposed an alternative that I hadn't considered: the inverted L.
I failed to mention that the distance from my operating position to the base of the anticipated antenna is only 17 feet, so using a tuner in the shack rather than at the base of the antenna won't result in large line losses; I plan to use LMR-400 cable that I have on hand.
Again, thanks all the sound advise. This is a great group.
