I grew up in the era of Tektronix 'scopes, etc. but now that I'm
fully grown (for the moment) I would like to suggest the following:
(a) If you really want an ancient boat anchor/piece of iron and
aluminum, then look no further than the myriad ads in eBay's Ham Radio
section, but
(b) if you want something that is handy, look into the PicoScope family,
e.g. the PicoScope 2104 / 2105. These are hand-held digital scopes the
size of an old-style Tektronix PROBE, and work with the computer that
Don Wilhelm has already suggested as being a necessity. I have one, and
am very pleased with it. The cost is ~$150 for the low-end model.
