usb to serial

Gary Lee-2
I have had great luck with a thing called an edgeport

made by insideout networks.
Not sure if it exists anymore.  They offered 4, 8, and 16 port versions that
I know of.
Gets power from the usb port, and serials can be defined as rs232 or 422.
Supports all the hardware handshake lines.
All my k3 connections are through this device under windows xp, and never
had a problem.
Hope this helps someone.

Re: usb to serial

I have a four-port Edgeport and it works great for everything *except* the K3 utility.  But then I have no end of trouble with the utility anyway.

Once I finally got it sort of working, opening the utility finds the K3 and reports status.  However, if I try to "test communications" or "refresh port list" the program simply closes.

I resort to a Quatech USB->Serial for any firmware installs and keep my fingers crossed.

Re: usb to serial

Guy, K2AV
Getting power from a USB port is problematic unless the draw is very
light. More than one serial port driven from a USB is driving on the
edge unless you know the circuit details behind the USB port.
Sometimes even one serial port is an issue given the circuit details
of what is reading the serial signals.

It is very clear with various experiences with USB ports, that there
are USB ports, and there are USB ports. The "U" in universal serial
port ain't so U as it's cracked up to be.  YMMV, all the way.

73, Guy.
