what connection to computer soundcard & Ham Radio Deluxe works well with K3?

Julie Royster
We have been using HRD logbook successfully but we want to start using more
features such as recording and digital modes.  What interfaces and sound cards
work well between K3 and HRD on a Windows 7 computer?  What do I need to buy?
Thanks!!

Two cables.

One from the speaker output of the computer to the K3 line it.

Then speaker out from the K3 to the mic input on the PC.   You do not
need external sound card or interface to work HRD digital modes.

Thats how I connect it between HRD and my K3.

Then you use DATA-A as the mode for the K3.

Simple as that.

Oh yes you need the serial interface connected to the PC.  But if you
alread have this connection working with the K3 software then you use
the same port settings in HRD.

Now you do have to go thru and get everything set up correctly but as
far as hardware goes that is all you need.

Also you can use JT65 with HRD doing the PTT.

Have fun.

May I suggest Line Out from the computer (instead of speaker output) to
the K3 Line In.
Also Line out from the K3 to Line In on the PC.
The levels between speaker out and mic levels are just too great and
need an attenuator to allow the levels to be set properly.  Line levels
are more "mild"

Yes, only 2 cables are required - the K3 has transformers on the Line in
and Line out signals that provide galvanic isolation - no extra
interface needed.

I think it would be about the same with any system.
My plans are to work such modes with the DX Lab suite and/or FLdigi.

Further to question:  Is there anything special about the cables
themselves?  What have people bought and used?

Re: what connection to computer soundcard & Ham Radio Deluxe works well with K3?

Ian Kahn, KM4IK
I use the latest version of HRD with my K3.  The cables are simple sound
card/speaker cables with 1/8" jacks.  When we were shutting down my
office I actually snagged from the trash what is basically a large sound
card pair, grouped into a single rubber sheathing.  One green connector
and one pink connector on each end.  Works perfectly.
