Many are quite pleased with the Yamaha CM500 headset.  It will plug
directly into the rear mic and headphones jacks.

There isn't a "best". Because of the K3's ability to tailor both xmit and recv
audio, the K3 can be successfully paired with almost any mic/cans. Many K3 owners,
myself included use a Yamaha CM500.

Don, can you turn on the K3's bias, and plug the CM500 directly into
the mic jack without using the little battery-bias box that comes with
it?

Tony,

Certainly -  you turn on bias in the menu and there is no need for the
battery box.

I use the heil proset with the hc4 element and it works great. Because of all the recommendations for the CM500 I just purchased one off amazon for $35.  I wanted to see what I was missing.

I use a professional mike from Electro Voice.  RE27.  Every report is
outstanding, without asking.

Larry,

Many microphones will do fine: a simple and cheap computermic as well as
the the super heill elements. Take your pick.

That's a great mic. I own several that I've used for recording music
professionally, and I've even used one briefly in my ham station. But
from a cost point of view, it is EXTREME overkill in the ham station,
and sounds no better than low cost mics like the CM500. I've used pro
mics in my ham station only because I had them and I didn't have another
good ham mic.

Pro mics need extensive equalization to sound good with ham gear (no low
end, a rising high end with lots of boost around 3kHz), and the K3 has
that capability built in. As others have noted, virtually any decent mic
will work fine with a K3. The only important exception are PRO electret
mics (balanced Lo-Z, with XL-connectors) -- there's no simple way to
power them from an unbalanced audio input. Pro dynamic mics work fine --
all you need are the connector adapters and that EQ.

I use the Yaesu MD-100ax8 since I already owned it.  I did make up a
special cable to go between the mic base and the K3 as I did not want to
chop up the stock cable.  I wired in the Up/Down switch and it worked
once the Config menu was set correctly.

I get good audio reports considering that I have a face for radio and a
voice for CW.  ;-)

Re: what microphones work best with K3?

I also have the CM500 but my main desk mic is an Icom SM-8. I use no equalization with the SM-8 and reports I get are don't touch a thing it sounds great.
When I switch to the CM500 (no equalization), they always tell the SM-8 sounds much better.

So 2 questions:

1) I know every voice is different but can any of u share the equalization settings you have set for the CM500. I'd like to at least get a starting point.

2) If I continue to use the SM-8, am I going to have to reset the equalization to flat after ever time I've used the CM500?

Seems cumbersome to have to switch back and forth between headset and desk mic....

Thanks for the advice and help!

Re: what microphones work best with K3?

Just wanted to report that what I received yesterday as my "great" deal from a company in northern PA was not the CM500 as advertised on amazon but HPE100M. I am thoroughly pissed and they were advertised as new and were in a crumbled box. Caveat emptor should have been alerted when the price was so low.

I can verify that despite his "voice made for CW" that N0NB sounds good on 1.947 most every night.  I got the MH2 with my K3 and always got excellent reports with it.  I now use a Radio Shack dynamic studio mic I bought for $15 NIB on Ebay and get good reports with it too.  With the range the K3 equalizer has pretty much any mic that will interface with the rig should sound good with the correct equalization.

For most competitive audio for DXing and contesting -- Lowest two bands
max cut, third band cut 6dB, then have someone listen with their IF set
wide. The objective is to hear no low end in your voice, which wastes
power and provides no speech intelligibility. Use additional cut in that
third band if he does hear low end.

The Sennheiser Headset PC-151 with the K3 is a outstanding combination. It is cheap and sounds great.
Even for those who transmit on AM, it produces a "studio quality" sound.
