-----------------------------------

It's a great little antenna for someonne who doesn't need to get out and
needs the absolute minimum of antenna. You're going to be on a boat! You
have far better alternatives (just about anything, in fact!).

I'm not "bad-mouthing" the antenna except that it's no "miracle". Your rig
loaded into any 1-meter long wire will do as well. There are no "miracles"
in antennas. The principles dating back to when Marconi was first fiddling
around are still equally valid today, and while different combinations have
emphasized certain characteristics for certain situation, the basic rules
from 100 years ago are still equally true today.

On a ship, you can actually get away with a vertical with outstanding
results, thanks to very low "ground" losses you'll see from the salt water.

If you're really limited, any "mobile" type antenna or other wire will
outperform the "miracle" whip. And the longer you can make the antenna, the
better, up to about 5/8 wave for a vertical at sea.

MC,
There's a useful comparison of several portable antennas on the Hfpack site,
and includes the "Miracle Whip" and a number of others both commercial and
home-brew.  Look for "Portable Antenna Testing Events and Shootout Reports"
-- the link is near the top of the page:
