yet another KX1 update from W5SV

David F. Reed
Folks,

I received a few suggestions on the alignment of my KX1 from various
people, direct, via the list and from Gary at Elecraft.

I have to admit, they were some good ideas, and I tried a few, and found
that two worked fairly well; I made a blunt Phillips from a normal
Phillips that fit in the area, with room to put some heat shrink tubing
on the shaft, and blunted via grinding the tip with a Dremel tool.

In short order, it aligned, and was getting about 4 watts on 40, a bit
less on 30 and 3.6 on 20, so I figure I can further refine later, its
time to get used to it and make some contacts - had to wait for a
thunderstorm to pass - got impatient, strung up some wire and
counterpoise (indoors) to the BNC to binding post, and got on 30 M, and
made a few contacts in the 800 - 900 mile range; I will try later on 40
(on the outside dipole after the thunderstorms dissipate) and in the
early morning after 40, move to 20.

A tremendous amount of fun, thanks to Elecraft, the help of a few
special folks, and the list, I now have my KX1 baptized with CW
contacts, all options (30 M module, Antenna Tuner, and Paddles) working
great.

Thanks for hearing me out and helping along the way.

That's normal output Dave. As described in the manual, the 20 meter output
power level to be 0.3 to 0.6 watts below the 40 meter output, if the output
filter is working correctly.

I suppose one might tinker with the inductors to get the same output on 20
that you get on 40, but if so you'll have compromised the harmonic rejection
of the output filters.
