For cw tune 28000 to 28100.

For ssb tune 28300 up to perhaps
29000.When activity is thin, I
expect you will find what there is
below 28700.

There are many cw beacon stations
on 10m.  Mostly between about 28170 and
28210.  They can give you a good idea
of whether there is an opening to
somewhere.

For a list of beacon stations, see
http://www.ten-ten.org/beacons.html

Good luck and 73

Dave Sublette
Ten-Ten International calling frequency is 28.450, if I remember
correctly. There seems always to be activity with those folks.

In my area, I have heard SSB signals 28.25 to 28.45. A local club uses
28.337 SSB. Another club runs CW practice on 28.150. A third club used
28.090 for CW/RTTY/DIGITAL. Most of this is local communication but, others
have joined the conversation as band conditions allow.
Area is Northeast Ohio.

10 meters is a great band! It's very quiet, generally, which bodes well
for QRP during band openings. I once worked Argentina from Pennsylvania
on 10 CW running 200 milliwatts to 10' of wire tossed out a
second-floor window.

When the band is open, there's generally some CW activity from
28.000-28.060 and SSB from 28.300 to 28.500. Of course it moves well
beyond this when it's *really* open or if there's a contest. Also, when
six meters is open, you'll hear some coordination activity on 28.800.

The Ten-Ten group's web site (http://www.ten-ten.org/) is a great
starting point. They list daily nets, contests (four per year) and
other operating activities. There's also a database of 10-10 numbers.
Mine is 5032  :)

Ron,

As well as checking the 10m beacons, I also find it useful to tune across
the Citizens Band just below 10m for possible openings. But don't be fooled
if you do not hear anything because the skip can be very selective
sometimes, meaning that a path might not be open between you and say a
beacon, but is open between you and somebody living not too many miles away
from that beacon. He is just listening because he thinks that the band is
dead. Same thing happens on 6m and even down on 15m. Nothing wrong with
calling a few CQs on a 'dead' band, surprising who comes back sometimes.

Good luck!

If you have a K2, don't forget the scanning feature. This is great for
10 meters or other quiet bands, in particular -- just let it scan for
signals over the entire CW or SSB sub-band while you do other things
around the shack/lab/office.

The K2's normal scanning mode mutes the receiver until an "interesting"
signal pops up. It also has a "live" scanning mode, which keeps the
receiver active so you can hear even very weak signals as the VFO
automatically tunes across them.

RSGB obviously only guides us in G-land, but they usually base their
bandplans on international guidelines. Their bandplan looks like this:

28,055 kHz QRS (slow telegraphy) Centre of Activity.
28,060 kHz QRP (low power) Centre of Activity.

How does one invoke the 'live' scanning mode on the K2?

Hi Kev,

Same as normal scanning, but hold the PFx button in for two seconds
until you see "AF ON" on the display.

If you don't see this, you'll need new firmware.
