2 questions, how to use P3

Benny Aumala-2
I got P3 here some weeks ago. It has transformed my way of band-life
more than expected. I seem to chase more after what is seen than heard.
I have been in dark, now I see. Still I cannot hear except  where RX
trace is.
With sub-receiver I can see where my both ears are.

1.
What functions do you use under key labels FN1...FN8 ??

2.
How did SVGA (if any) change your working habits (compared to P3 screen) ??

Re: 2 questions, how to use P3

Mike K2MK
Hi Benny,

My Fn buttons are:
Span 5, Span 10, Span 20, FixTrack
Span 50, Span 100, Waterfall, SVGA data

The Span settings are obvious. FixTrack toggles back and forth between fixed tune mode and tracking mode. Waterfall is used to change the height of the waterfall with the knob. SVGA Data toggles data mode on and off on the external SVGA monitor.

The SVGA did not really change my use of the P3 it just made it much easier for me to see and permits me to view a larger band width and a taller waterfall. The data mode display at the bottom of the external monitor is helpful but it was not really critical for my style of operating. For me the SVGA option was worth the cost. For others (perhaps with younger eyes) it might not be worth the cost.

Hi Benny,

I set up the FN buttons on my P3/SVGA for different spans.  For example FN1 might be 5 KHz span, FN5 = 20 KHz span, FN2 = 200 KHz span.   I also have a function key to turn fixed tune mode on/off.  And I have a FN key set as Knob Tap.

The SVGA does a couple of things for me.  Since it is doing a larger FFT (2K vs 1K) I get better detail of a signal.  This is especially useful for tuning in digital modes.  The SVGA also allows you to have almost the entire screen displaying the waterfall.  This gives you a very long history and is especially useful working crowded bands and pileups.

Of course I would suggest picking up an SVGA card

Paul

I have SPAN 4, 20, 50, 100, and 200 plus 3 blank ones I haven't found a
use for.  I normally operate on SPAN 50.  I run in fixed tune mode, and
that puts either the lower band edge, or up in 50 KHz increments at the
left of the screen.  I don't have the second RX, VFO B cursor either
shows up on the screen or the "VFO B is thataway" arrow does if it's
tuned too far away.

Don't have the SVGA.

And yes, the P3 really changed the way I operate ... I'm nearly all CW
and now I look and tune to what I see.  Cool for working DX split, and
it's really easy to spot pileups.

1)
FN1=Span 20
Fn2=Span 200
Fn3=Peak
Fn4=Freeze
Fn5=FixTrack
Fn6=SVGA menu  (was WfallMrkrs b4 I got my SVGA board installed)
Fn7=Knob Tap
Fn8=Knob Hold

Fn7 & Fn8 Knob Tap & Hold are there because
when I use MKR A & B and try to move to & back from a frequency
when I tap or hold the Knob,
I tend to shift it while I am touching it,
causing me to go where I didn't want to go,
so with the Fn7 & Fn8 buttions I don't have this problem

2)
I love the longer waterfall display,
it gives me more time to find a signal,
b4 it disappears off the bottom of the waterfall screen.

Thanks for answers here and privately.
I found many ideas , new ways to think.
My settings found at once following functions:

FN1   Span 10
FN2   Span 40
FN3   Peak
FN4   Knob Tab (not to twist the frequency with Knob)
FN5   Span 20
FN6   Span 80
FN7   Fix Track
FN8   Freeze

I will test Knob Hold, if necessary.
For SVGA the price tag is about 400 Euros here with 20" screen.
I agree the large screen has much better resolution. A new idea was
long waterfall not to loose disappearing signal.

Thank you, much appreciated.

I use a KVM (keyboard video mouse) switch to share my desktop PC monitor
with the P3 SVGA output.    Works great and I only need one monitor.
