2m Transverter

David Pratt
Hello Dave -

What I omitted to say in my msg on the reflector was that you WILL need
the KXV3 installed in your K3.  When I mentioned not needing the KXV3A I
was making an assumption that your K3 already has the original KXV3
installed. Apart from the power cable the only additional cables you
will need are a pair of BNC-BNC cables to connect the XV144 to the K3.
You can drive the K3 with just 1mW of power from the XV144.

I hope that helps.

Re: 2m Transverter

Hi David,

Thanks for the response. This is exactly the kind of information which is helpful.
And you're right. I misspoke, cannot use a 2m repeater for transmitting cw but I have an external keyer which
will generate the tones so can hold down the ptt on the K3 and transmit that way.

73,

Dave

actually, you *could* do it without the KXV3(A) .. just configure the
XV144 for high-level common IF and run it with a watt or two  ;)

Dave,
I don't want to assume anything, so I have to ask you why in the world
you'd want to do CW over a repeater? Are the repeater owners hip with
the idea? Thirty years ago a group of us tried to run CW practice on an
unused local repeater, with the owners permission and the support of the
local club, and that went over like a lead balloon. Not sure it would be
any different now.

Re: 2m Transverter

When tuned to 144-146 MHz per Elecraft instructions, the XV144 transverter will also operate in the 146-148 MHz and nearby MARS frequencies although with decreased sensitivity and output power. These findings are posted on http://www.qsl.net/kp4md/xv144.htm
K7MDL wrote
Realize the XV144 (external transverter) is spec'd for 144 to 146MHz. Also running FM it is recommended you run at lower power than the max 20W. Most FM repeaters in the US are 145-147.999. May be different elsewhere. The internal transverter K144XV also works in 2MHz bands and switches the LO to move between 144 and 146 segments.
