Re: A Solution for Antenna-Restricted Hams?

Bob Nielsen-2
There are similar solutions available from US manufacturers, for
example:

http://www.utilitycamo.com/

When I lived in Tucson, there was a saguaro cactus cell phone tower
nearby.  I never could figure out why they went to the expense, since
there was a telephone pole adjacent to the stealth installation.

Re: A Solution for Antenna-Restricted Hams?

Well, I've been using a Tarheel 100A screwdriver antenna mounted to a tripod
on my balcony.  I live in NYC.  It's small enough to go mostly unnoticed.  I
also have an SB-220 hooked up to it, and it handles the power well.  It's a
compromise antenna, but it works fine considering what I'm up against.  I
worked a Russian and Slovenian station last night on 20m FB with this setup.

Here in Tucson, The Larson Company (http://www.utilitycamo.com/) is very
successful making all sorts of "camoflauged" antenna structures.  Fake
saguaro cactus designs are quite popular.  Unfortunately, this stuff isn't
cheap!  Disguising cellphone towers is a big part of their business, but
they do all sorts of exotic things.

These things are great in concept.   However, a large amount of the
stealth is lost in the 6 months of site prep and erection of them.
Thye would be fine if they just grew overnight.

Every one I've seen stuck out as a sore thumb.  You need them to be
located in a forest of same type "structures".

I think you have hinted at the REAL problem.  It isn't that they can see the
tower and think they are ugly at all.  It is that they "know" what they are
and just do not like them (NIMBY).

Re: A Solution for Antenna-Restricted Hams?

daleputnam

Lessee..... four square for 160.... would be....

so that would be..... about xxxx sq foot.....

and a roof over that.. with walls... inbetween....

adjust for the added capacitance of the internal stuff...you know.. sofas.. bathrooms...

tables... walls.. windows.... although windows wouldn't cause much effect.. so it would be good to have more of them.... so... now for the garage...

ok... .. to plan a garage would be.... simple...

a four square for 80.... .. is so... by so....

follow the same process....

now for the dog house....

uh..... oh.. ok.. got it... a four square for 40....

lessee... anything else? ...
oh sure.. a shelter for the cat.... easy.. four square on 20.

now... there you go.. hidden antennas... site prep to include a ground grid under all...

and of course the height becomes a multi storied arrangement.. but then you would only have to explain that the elevator is broken and sure the view is great.. but it is such a climb up the stairway...

now.. how many stories? ........ that would be... somewhere near 20 stories.. but that can be lowered by cathedral ceilings... and the like...

ok.. so there you go... and for the other bands?.... that would be the out buildings... ... you know.. garden storage... greenhouse... tool shed... barn.... but you can't have too many animals.. they control that too...

But one last question.. if you build it... are you going to have any neighbors worth their salt.. and worth the trouble to invite over?

Telephone poles are not subject to Wireless Communications
Facilities ordinances.  Mobile phone antennas are.

Planning and zoning people live in a different universe from

There are equivalent "stealth" antennas used in the mobile
phone industry, and each is custom designed for the application.
The design and installation price of those make a fully-equipped
K3 seem like pocket change, ditto for hiring someone like me to
litigate for the permits necessary to erect same in a residential
  district, PRB-1 notwithstanding.
