Elecraft does not sell a 13.6 VDC "AC Adapter Power Supply" for the KX3. This is a very common product and there are many
alternatives on the market. Most of us have drawers full of these AC adapters. However, most are cheap, noisy switching power supplies. Is there a recommended KX3 power supply that provides sufficient current to obtain the full 10 Watt output and yet not add to the nosie floor of the receiver? I'm using a DIN rail mount commercial supply made by Mean Well, model
MDR-40-12. It's a switcher, it's small, and I've had no noise issues. It's output is adjustable from about 12 to 15 Volts (screwdriver adjust). The continuous current rating is 3.3 Amps. You can find them through a Google search. I bought mine from TRC Electric though I see that Mouser and many others also have them. Being a commercial supply, you must provide your own line cord (attaches via industrial screw terminals). TRC had them for under $25 though their shipping was a bit steep. I'm not the only one I know of using this model supply with a KX3. I've heard no complaints. I used the MFJ PS for the FT-817 they sell the correct connector for a
direct connection to the KX3 and all the voltage needed to charge the batteries plus full output of 12w. I could not find an added noise from this supply plus it's small and easy to pack with all cords now included with it. 73, Fred/N0AZZ -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Bob Schumacher Sent: Wednesday, February 27, 2013 9:45 AM To: [hidden email] Subject: [Elecraft] AC Adapter Power Supply For KX3 Elecraft does not sell a 13.6 VDC "AC Adapter Power Supply" for the KX3. Bob,
The KX3 is a direct to baseband SDR receiver, so a good power supply is a measure to prevent noise and hum. Wayne's recommendation (and mine) is to use a well regulated linear power supply. There are many 4 to 6 amp linear supplies available. That current rating will allow you to use that supply with the KX3 in addition to several shack accessories. The Astron 5A or 7A would fit the need nicely but a larger supply would work nicely too (put it on the floor under the desk). 73, Don W3FPR On 2/27/2013 10:44 AM, Bob Schumacher wrote: > Elecraft does not sell a 13.6 VDC "AC Adapter Power Supply" for the KX3. I have been using an old original Toshiba Tecra (15v 4a) switching power supply. I measured its output as 15v (with my Fluke meter) before plugging it in, and just had to replace the original (larger) coaxial plug with one for the KX3. I don't hear anything objectionable using it. I note that there are other claimed equivalent power supplies on eBay for about $7 including shipping.

I use 2 Kenwood PS30 linear supplies under the table (1 is a spare), had them a long time now..
They are heavy but give a stable 20 Amps at 13.8V; they run my KX3, FT817ND and my HFPacker Amp at full power.. I also have an ex-medical UPS unit (at 12.0V) under the bed for nighttime use... KX3 at 5W. And lastly a switcher PSU that gives 14.8V at 5 Amp that I use for charging batteries, etc. These old linears can be found on sale on the usual places <grin>. -- Dave G KK7SS Richland, WA KX3 #097 ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

I also use a toshiba 15v supply and also heard nothing objectionable on the kx3 BUT
the I/Q output became a lot noisier than with one of the astron rs35's I have as the main 12v supplies. Mark.
