70 Q's, 42 countries, 12 watts with K2 1520 and a 130 ft cf zepp. Not
exactly QRP, but with sunspots the way they are I'm willing to stretch a point. One of the countries was new for me: PZ5WW. Lots of band noise on all bands. Coudn't break *any* pileups at all. When the sunspots were up I could break 60-70% at 5-10 watts. Even so it was fun. Did about 5 hours total. 73, Lenny W2BVH _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Congrats Lenny! You did well. You didn't say which bands
you were on, but I suspect 20 meters was your main one. Actually, 40 meters was more productive for me, but that was probably more due to my choice of operating times. I worked about 50+ there, but I was "fudging" the power a bit more than you. When you worked PZ5WW, you were very possibly working one of our more famous QRPers--Hank, K8DD, who is one of our most recent ARCI Hall of Fame additions. There were 3 other ops along--Jay, W5JAY; Stan, AC8W; and Jim, KB8TXZ. They will be operating through tomorrow I think, but using individually assigned calls in addition to PZ5WW. Listen for them if you have a chance. Also, if you haven't worked VP6DX yet, check around for that operation on Dulcie Island. They have great signals on just about every band. As I write this email, they are booming in on 40 CW. ARRL DX Contest, my $0.02 worth:
I was trying out the N1MM logger for the first time in a big contest. I used a K2 at 5 Watts and dipoles for various bands. Total: 402 QRP QSOs, about 200 on 20 m, a handful on 15 m, and about 100 each on 80 and 40. Most exciting moment: working VP6DX on 80 m QRP. As several posters have noted, the low sunspot activity (and the unfortunately poor geomagnetic conditions) were very telling. Conditions this year were far worse than the previous three years. Without the K2 mojo, I do not know where we would be. (My coastal QTH is a big help too.) 73, Steve Kercel AA4AK _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. 112 Qs to 55 countries, using my K2 at 5W to a vertical and dipole.
EU was a complete washout - I heard lots of stations but couldn't work any, either day. But I got all the other official continents, plus Antarctica! VP6DX on 20/17/15/10 (but they're "easy" from the left coast), several new entity contacts (including PZ5WW, DC4 and DP0GVN) and many new band-entity contacts. In the last two hours, the JAs showed up on 20 and I was breaking pileups with 5W to the dipole. That was good fun. Made up for the frustrating hours getting nowhere on 80m during the middle of the night. I'm always learning new ways to run my K2 better. This weekend's lesson was the ATT key. I had been using PRE on 20 and 15, and happened to click through ATT/PRE on 40. The band was noisy, so PRE was a big mistake, but ATT seemed to quiet the noise and make the signals "pop" - even though they were very quiet signals. Not at all what I expected, but something I'll play with in the future. 73 de chris K6DBG _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Lenny,
nice work with your K2. i enjoyed the event with a K2/100 (that previously enjoyed similar contests QRP before its 'upgrade'). the low bands especially are in nice shape, even for modest stations - and I even worked VP6DX on 15m from the east coast with only a vertical. at least one of the ops at PZ5WW is K8DD, a K2-user. prior to event on thursday nite he was running QRP from his K2 on 40 and 20 meters. hint -- look for some of these visiting DX ops lingering today after the contest. 73, Curt --- w2bvh <[hidden email]> wrote: > 70 Q's, 42 countries, 12 watts with K2 1520 and a > 130 ft cf zepp. Not > exactly QRP, but with sunspots the way they are I'm > willing to stretch a > point. Good job, Chris.
If you do this well at the bottom of the solar cycle, think what you'll be able to do when things are better. 73, Bob N6WG ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chris Kantarjiev" <[hidden email]> To: <[hidden email]> Sent: Monday, February 18, 2008 9:28 AM Subject: [Elecraft] Re: ARRL CW DX > 112 Qs to 55 countries, using my K2 at 5W to a vertical and dipole. > EU was a complete washout - I heard lots of stations but couldn't > work any, either day.
