Adding the amplifier to the K3

Benson-2
During these trying economic times I'm not sure if I can swing the 100W
K3 right now, so I may just order the QRP version. How difficult is
adding the amplifier at a later date?  Would it pay in time and
aggravation just to wait and order the 100W kit?

It is a breeze to add the amp Benson.  I would go with the 10W version
and add it later if it means you can get your radio sooner :)

Benson,

It all depends on your personal point of reference.

If you are ordering the kit, the QRP version will not take quite as long
to build as the 100 watt version.  Then when you get the KPA3 later, you
will have to invest an extra 2 to 3 hours.  There are very few pieces of
the QRP K3 that must be removed to install the KPA100.  Take a look at
the KPA3 instructions to get an idea of how much removal work must be
done - that is the only additional aggravation over installing the KPA3
initially.  I would estimate that all the removal steps can be
accomplished in 15 to 30 minutes depending on your skills with a
screwdriver.

Yes, I initially ordered the 10 watt K3 and later upgraded it to the
K3/100 - no trouble at all, just a bit of time.

When I received my K3/100 a year ago, the instructions were to build the
10W version and test it, then add the PA. Since then the instructions
may have changed. In any event adding the PA is quite straightforward.

The post and packing charges can add up if you buy accessories
afterwards, while it won't apply to yourself - here in the UK there is a
very expensive customs handling charge by UPS or even more expensive by
Parcel Force (£11 and £13.50 respectively when I bought the K3 and
accessories), so especially for overseas buyers it may be well worth
buying what you want in one package.
