Auto ATU for K3 + Amplifier

Any advice on which automatic ATU would match well to a K3 with an amplifier (solid state) to around the 500W level?

I use the LDG AT-1000pro with my K2 and Tokyo Hy-Power amp and it works out for me very well.  You can check out the specs on their web site.  It will handle up to 1 KW.

Thanks for the responses so far. I am currently using a Z11 auto tuner at 10W.

Can anyone help me with a configuration setting? What I would like to happen is for something useful to happen when I press the ATU Tune button on the K3. What it should do is provide a low power signal and toggle a tune line. So far all I can get it to do it tell me the KAT3 is not installed, which I know already.

Having lived with my K3 for almost 24 hours, I find one of the major design flaws in the K3 is the lack of antenna outputs for those of us who don't need an ATU built in. for HF only it is understandable, but it is crazy considering the rig does 6m.  The ANT button appears redundant, I am sure we could have a PCB with two or 3 RF connectors and a relay or two. I am not sure I really like the way the SO239 is connected - but I suppose it is only HF... Operating without the right side panel (don't ask) the wire loop certainly picks up lots of local noise from my PC and monitor.

Hi Mike:

If you don't have the KAT3 installed, I don't think that tapping the
"ATU TUNE" button is not gonna do anything for you. However, just to the
left of that is the XMIT/TUNE button. In the menu system you can specify
the amount of power that will be produced when you press/hold TUNE. A
PTT logic output is available in a couple of places on the back (Key Out
and in the ACC connector) of the rig which you could use to "trigger" a
tune line of your making.

Oop... sorry about the double negative. It should say...
"If you don't have the KAT3 installed, I don't think that tapping the

The "ATU Tune" button is for the internal tuner, which you
apparently don't have.  But if you push the "Xmit" button"
to the left (hold it for a second or so), you should get
what you need I think.

Here is something for you to check.  May work,
may not.

The K2 has provision for a keying output closure
to key amps and such.  The K3 does also.
Check to see if it is providing its closure during
TUNE as well as during TX.  That might give you
the closure you need to stir your ATU to action.

Good luck and 73

Mike

I use the MFJ 994B tuner with an ALS-600 amp. I used the same setup with my K2 and have had no problems. Now that the MFJ-998 tuner is available I would pop for the extra capacity if I had it to do over. The 998 will automatically lock out the amp when the tuner is tuning.

The unfortunate thing about the Elecraft rigs is that there is no way to put them in tune mode from an outside line, nor do they generate a signal out when put in tune. I haven't found any way to get them to one touch tune like other rigs. Yes, I've mentioned it before. Since the development list is not public, one never knows if a requested feature is ever coming or not.
