Average Cost of Used K2/100???

A friend of mine asked me at a local hamfest this last weekend how much a
K2/100 costs these days. I told him that I didn't know. He was thinking
somewhere along the lines of $400.00...but I told him that seemed quite low
to me.

Anyone know what the current cost might be or know of one available?

My general "rule of thumb" when purchasing used equipment is to spend no
more than 2/3 of the original price unless I know the reputation of the
seller and his capability to properly state its condition - and at my
top price, I expect a 90 day guarantee - at substantially lower prices,
that guarantee is not considered (I am taking my chances).

The price is highly dependent on the options installed - a bare K2/100
(CW only) kit new is priced at almost $1050 while a fully loaded K2/100
with all options (including the KDSP2) is priced a bit below $1560.  If
that fully loaded K2/100 was built by a builder for hire, the fee paid
was likely somewhere between $180 and $450 - again dependent on the
options and the particular builder.  So the new value of a K2/100 is
anywhere between $1050 and $2010 - depending on how the builder values
his work.

Not many K2s are selling above the kit price, and many are well below
it.  A used K2 (even with a low serial number) may be a bargain if one
is willing to add the upgrades and do a full alignment and calibration -
properly done, even the lowest serial number K2 can perform as well as a
brand new well-constructed kit.  My serial number 00020 K2 can be
witness to that fact.  Elecraft has made all the upgrades available as kits.

The price may also depend on the K2 serial number and firmware level, if
the serial number is below 3000 and the owner has not done *all* the A
to B upgrades, I would de-value it.  If no upgrades have been installed,
the cost of updating the hardware and firmware can vary from about $130
if you do it yourself to $350 if you hire another builder to do it for you.

Bottom line, the selling price is whatever a willing seller and a
willing buyer can agree on.  What I have stated reflects my own personal
opinions and may not be true for the general case of K2 owners/sellers.

When I sold my K2/100 with the SSB board and the Yaesu knob one year
ago, I think I got around $850 to $900.  Mine was in pristine condition
with all boxes / paperwork and included a custom felt embroidered dust
cover.  It was 2 yrs old, SN 4000-something.

Value of used things can be tough to establish.  My first stop is eBay.
You can see what stuff sells for there.  Then check the other classified
sites (eham, qth) and see what folks are listing there, but remember
that asking price may not reflect actual value.

If the item is still being sold new, then you can often apply a
"percentage" rule.  I figure a range of 60% to about 80% of new cost
depending on the condition & age.  With a K2, you have the kit factor
that further muddies the water.  Is an assembled K2 worth more or less
than the kit?  The answer varies depending on the buyer.
