BNC jumpers?

Joe Subich, W4TV-4

Anyone have a source for quality *50 Ohm* BNC jumpers - like that
supplied with the P3 - at a reasonable price?  I can't find them
locally and the ones at places like All Electronics are of poor
quality/intermittent, etc.

I think Joe's looking for cables. I make my own, using RG8X and
crimp/solder BNCs.

I make them myself, I haven't found a source that is reasonably priced. Then again, I use BNC or N connectors on everything...

Try Newark

http://www.newark.com/amphenol-connex/115101-19-12-00/coaxial-cable-assy-rg58-12in-black/dp/25T0737

Amphenol Connex part number 115101-19-12.00

Personally, I prefer lighter cables using LMR100 etc for low power
inter-connections but I can't get into their on-line catalogue.

The winner seems to be Cables on Demand www.cablesondemand.com with
L-Com http://www.l-com.com/productcenter.aspx?ID=8 a strong second.

Both have RG-58 or RG-174 cables at reasonable prices.  L-Com offers
cables at any length - in 6" increments to 3 feet and one foot steps
beyond that - while Cables on Demand does not have quite the choice
of lengths but are slightly (5 to 7%) less expensive.

Right angle BNC connectors are also available from either vendor for
either RG-174 or RG-58.

The question is, can you get RG-316? Same size as 174 but higher power handling capacity and tougher jacket.

I think RG142 is closer.  Specifying that doubles the price, depending on
length.  Worth it if you need the power handling and flexibility.

 > I generally would want UHF connectors, but some BNC.

Neither of the two houses I mentioned show UHF connectors at all.
They're generally targeting the commercial world and seem to be at
home with BNC, TNC, N, SMA and some of the specialty "Motorola"
connectors.

On the other hand, there are some places that specialize in the
amateur world - Cable Experts (www.cablexperts.com), ABR Industries
(www.abrind.com) - who don't seem to have BNC to BNC but look to be
heavily into UHF and N cables in .240 inch (RG8X size), .405 inch
(RG-213, LMR-400 size), and .60 inch (LMR-600) cables.   The LMR/CNT
cables are double shielded (braid over foil) where the RG8X and
RG-213 cables are single (95%) shield.

Cable Experts also shows RG-142U (Teflon, .195 inch) cables ...

RG142 has a copperweld center conductor which isn't very flexible  RG400 is similar but has a stranded center conductor and is more flexible (but also expensive).

The steel component of copperweld makes it lossier than solid or
stranded copper below about 10 MHz. You can see this in graphs of loss
vs frequency for coax with CCS center conductor.

RG223 is great stuff, expensive but double sheilded and silver plated braid and center conductor. It has very low DC resistance if you are running some distance with a DC feed for an accessory.

Right angle BNC connectors are also available from either vendor for
either RG-174 or RG-58.

Re: BNC jumpers? (Thanks)

You can frequently find RG400 jumpers for sale on eBay, with useful
lengths, even if you have to cut off the connectors already on them.
They sometimes have one or more BNC connectors already on the cable.
RG400 is still made new and is rated for the kinds of sharp bends that
are found in aircraft wiring harnesses.  This is really good stuff
that will last a lifetime. Rated at many times ham radio QRO power
level.  It's good for SHORT runs in a station, very flexible and looks
good bundled up.  It's the same outside diameter as RG58 and uses the
UG175 adapter as a good fit adapter to put a PL259 on the end(s).
What I like the most about it, is in soldering connectors, you CAN'T
MELT it.  You can strip a bit of the outside jacket and sweat (solder)
the shield to copper strap without harming it in any way, for
excellent grounding and bonding of stuff running around the station.
I've only ever been able to do that with teflon coax.

Once you get to know all RG400's advantages, it kind of grows on you.
