BUG NIGHT

Indy-3
New Year's Eve is traditionally is a time to review the year past, and wax nostalgic.  For some years amateur radio ops have dusted off their straight key and put it on the air.  But what about other, perhaps more challenging antique keys of historic and nostalgic value?

Semi-automatic keys, bugs, have also been coming out of hiding on this night.  Each year more and more have participated in SKN (Silent Key Night) with these keys.  Last year such rare pieces were heard as: a Dow Universal Rotary bug, a 1936 McElroy bug, a Vibroplex Upright, a Speed-X 501, a Vibroplex Midget, a Vibroplex Double Lever, a blue Blue Racer from 1917, a right-angle bug known as a Codetrol, a Melehan Variant.

There are no "rules," no limitations, no points, no exchanges.  Just have fun sharing stories about the history of and how you came by your nostalgic key.  No need to worry about your fist, we are all just doing what we can honoring something from our past.

Hope to hear you, and best wishes for your new year!

RE: BUG NIGHT

Darwin, Keith
SKN - I thought it stood for "Straight Key Night".

I suppose there's room for bugs & such but to me that is getting away
from the "make CW with no crutches" thought.  It DOES work into the
nostalgia of the evening though so if you're there with your old bug,
I'll do my best to work you :-)

I can't wait!  I've recently re-discovered how much fun a straight key
is.  I've been using it almost as much as my paddles.

SKN - I can't wait!!!

RE: BUG NIGHT

Daniel Reynolds-2
I'm glad the K2 firmware allows for manual and automatic keying ... my Palm
Mini-Paddles developed a problem and I had to switch to straight keying on the
K2, and then turned the palm paddle on its side and used it as a straight
key... boy am I ever spoiled - almost forgot how to send good code without a
keyer.

I'll be there with my Speed-X key, Drake 2-NT and 2-B. I'll be rock-bound
since I haven't been able to find a VFO that costs less than the transmitter
itself, but I did it 48 years ago, I can stand it for one night.

Hmmm, I wonder if I could throttle back the K1 and use it as a 40m VFO. In
the 60's, I used to work QRP with my Meissner Signal Shifter (an appropriate
name if I ever heard one) loaded directly into an antenna.

RE: BUG NIGHT

Ron D'Eau Claire-2
I'm usually around for a few QSO's on 40 or 80 meters using my J-38 WWII
straight key on the K2/100.

If someone calls me using a bug or keyer, I'll switch to my standard QRQ
keying device: a 1960 vintage Vibroplex Standard Bug that was passed onto me
by the widow of a good friend and commercial radio operator. If I get tired
of that I'll switch to my Speed-X Logan-Style Bug, ca. 1950, that I've had
since I got my General class license.

Otherwise I'm on my J-38 straight key.

The K2 keyer is very, very nice, and I've had a lot of nice rag-chews on it
using my Scotia paddles, but I must say that there's something enticing
about the challenge, feel and sound of a bug, even after all these years.
The straight key is always hooked up for whenever I need to QRS below about
15 wpm.

Yes indeed, Straight Key Night is almost upon us ! I can hardly wait to start pounding the brass !  There is however one thing that bothers me. The use of bugs and other semi-automatic apperatice for sending morse on this evening. And yes I know there are alot of old bugs out there that need to be dusted off es put into operation, but that is really not the point. I also realize that there are no rules per say regarding what kind of equipment can be used. But they don't call it straight key night fer nothing. Call me a purist, call me a bum, call me whatever, but PLEASE don't call one of the great traditions of this hobby  BUG NIGHT !  Please don't misunderstand me I have several bugs in my collection es enjoy using them from time to time. It's just that iv'e seen many a wonderful things in this hobby go by the wayside. (including morse code) So if you do have a straight key I urge u to use it on SKN es help keep this fine tradition alive.                           TNX FE

Yes, it was appropriately named!  My Elmer, Art W6RMK, had one that he
had worked a great deal on to get it compensated and stable.  However,
it still moved as you brought your hand up to the dial.  Fortunately, he
was an AM guy, and what's a little drift on AM?

RE: BUG NIGHT

In reply to this post by Gregg mulder
You are quite right, Fred, New Year's Eve is "Straight Key Night". It used
to run just a few hours New Year's Eve for North American Hams but was
lengthened by popular demand. Now it runs from 0000 to 2400 UTC 1 January
each year. And participation keeps growing, with last year resulting in the
greatest number of logs. It's not about how many contacts, but voting on the
most interesting QSO and best fist.

It was originally intended for straight keys back before keyers were common
as a reminder to ops that their bug wasn't the only way to send CW <G>. But
the evolution to include bugs has been recognized in this year's
announcement: "You will hear as many vintage radios on the air during SKN as
you will variety of keys. And you will hear signals generated using
old-fashioned bugs, a variation of the straight key. SKN is the time amateur
radio recalls the past, transporting it to the present."

(Ref: http://www.arrl.org/contests/rules/2006/skn.html)

For quite a while there has been a monthly operating activity called 'Bug
Night'. I don't think it's still going on.

So even though you will hear some bugs, it is still "Straight Key Night"!

Of course there are a few of us that remember before there was a SKN....and
things like milkshakes that were made of ice-cream, and neighborhood bakeries,
and bikes that didn't have more than one set of gear ratios.

But, look at is this way....with CW in such disrespect, and fewer and fewer of
us who use it, hearing a bug or cootie or whatever that isn't electronic keying
beats amtor, pactor, BPL. echolink. etc.

I may not make it on...but I sure plan to listen to the concert.

Most of the parts on my bug are "straight."  Unfortunately, I can no
longer send readable CW with it (dits are easy to start, a bit hard to
stop, and my dahs are really long waiting for the electronics to make
them for me), but I do have a hand crafted "real" straight key made from
solid brass parts that weighs about 8 lbs, and I'll probably turn on the
radio some on Sat night.

Actually, there is SKN and there is Bug Night.  They are held at the
same time.  One does not replace the other!

However, I will be operating Dec. 31 with my like-new 1942 Vibroplex

RE: BUG NIGHT

In reply to this post by Douglas Westover
I had a less charitable play on the word "Shifter" when I was using it.

Thanks to Don, W3FPR, my 50 dollar Drake 2-NT now has a $600 VFO! At his
suggestion, I connected my K2 to the DL1 with a BNC T-fitting. I connected
the 3rd leg through an 0,01 uf cap to the Crystal socket on the front of the
2-NT. I set the power to 0.1 watts which gave me about 2v rms and generated
a nice clean full power signal from the Drake.

I still haven't solved how to key the K2 on from the 2-NT, though. There's a
VFO Key jack on the back of the 2-NT for just such a purpose, but I don't
think the K2 is going to like having 100 volts on the key input.

Just for fun, here is a picture of my Drake 2-line with K2 all lashed up
with a bizillion little jumpers to get it working:

Scroll down to the Drake 2-NT section.
