Discovered another reason I don't like them spiral lights with the nasty mercury
in them....I have been plagued by QRN.....and once I "heard" that it was a very regular pattern(like a fast motor-boat) I went hunting.... Sure enough, one of them modren, don't use much power, lasts a long time toxic material containing bulbs was ossylayting to beat the band.... Now, I have unscrewed it and have packed it away in a shock proof transportation carrier so that I can legally transport it to one of the two approved faciltities around here that accepts them...and hope that it doesn't break and force me to report myself to the Maryland Environmental Police so they can condem my car and force me to hire a toxic waste hauler to take the car with the shattered bulb to the approved disposal facility. 73 k3hrn Thom,EIEIO Email, Internet, Electronic Information Officer www.baltimorehon.com/ Home of the Baltimore Lexicon www.tlchost.net/hosting/ Web Hosting as low as 3.49/month _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Did the problem go away when you replaced it with another of that
type - i.e, was it a defective bulb? Or do all bulbs of this type give you this problem? I have several of them here and haven't noticed any problem, but I might have missed something. I have one that's right over the rig...and as far as I can tell, it isn't making noise....I unscrewed it and there was no difference in the QRN. What I did notice is that the light from the defective bulb was rapidly pulsating...but you had to look very closely to notice it. So.....one night I will turn off all the lights in the house and see if the background noise gets less. Thom and the group, I have had a terrible noise on 40m for quite a while and I thought (big mistake) it was really band noise. Last Thursday evening just before the Fox hunt, I decided to really determine if it was band noise or "in the house" noise. The CFL's, computer, and computer monitor were fine. The last thing I powered off was the brick power supply for an external IDE hard drive that I use for backups. The +20 noise dropped to nothing. Plugging it back in produced the +20 noise again. My K2 with the KDSP2 sounds better now than it has sounded in a long while. I never realized just how noisy those small devices are. Hope this helps someone else.... I can report exactly the same thing! My external USB drive's power supply
is absolutely atrocious. I had blamed my high noise level on everything else first. I'd even turned the computer (mac) off, and that made no difference! One very good thing about Macs - I haven't heard of a single instance of
noisy psu On 09/03/2008 22:42, "Stephen Prior" <[hidden email]> sent: > I can report exactly the same thing! My external USB drive's power supply > is absolutely atrocious. In reply to this post by Stephen Prior
Every lamp socket we have is occupied by a CFL bulb.
No sign of noise. 73! Ken Kopp -K0PP [hidden email] _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
