Re: Battery Low K3

Don Wilhelm
I assume you mean the KX3.  The K3 has no internal battery.

If you have Ni-MH batteries, they need recharging.  If you are using
Alkaline batteries, they need to be replaced.  I assume you have set the
menu BAT MIN for the type of battery you are using.  See the KX3 manual
page 36 of the manual.

Set BAT MIN for the type batteries used.  The default of 10 volts is
good for external Lead Acid batteries.  All other types require a
different setting.

It is a K3.  Bought it used and carries a low serial number. Never have changed the internal battery (over 8 years in my possession).

Re: Battery Low K3

Bill Frantz
I get that message when the main power supply for the radio is
low. (I use a solar power with battery system most of the time.)
Check your power supply.

Mark,

Then check the power supply voltage (Use the alternate VFB B display)
and all connectors.
That message has nothing to do with the RTC battery.

There is no internal battery in the K3 other than the tiny RTC battery.

Re: Battery Low K3

Elecraft mailing list
Chuck
An not sure where the people answering your question are obtaining their dis-information from.   In any case, the K3 does indeed have a 3 V lithium on the main board.  It is used to power the clock, and it can last from 2 to 10 years.
It is a CR 2032 cell and is located  on the left front side on the RF board.
This information is on page 59 of the K3 assembly manual.  Additionally,  it is also on page 54  BAT MIN in the Owner's Manual.
Replace the battery and you will be good to go.

Re: Battery Low K3

Don Wilhelm
Dick and Chuck,

Please read the description for the BAT MIN on page 54 of the Owner's
Manual again.
It explicitly states that BAT MIN refers to the main 12v power supply to
the K3 and NOT to the 3 volt lithium battery.

Check the power supply voltage as read in the ALT VFO B DISPLAY. That
gives you the voltage seen inside the K3 and if you have voltage drops
at the connectors for the power cable, it will be shown there.
The usual setting for BAT MIN is 11 volts.

You will NOT be "good to go" even if you replace the lithium 3 volt battery.

I believe BAT MIN is a user setting to determine the voltage at which the radio will indicate Battery Low notification and below which it will SHUTDOWN!

Hi,

finally it means that RTC lithium cell low voltage status is not alerted at
all, right?
So I should check it or better replace it after 11yrs, right? :)

Re: Battery Low K3

Bill Frantz
In reply to this post by Petr, OK1RP/M0SIS
I don't use the RTC for much, so I let it get way off NIST time.
What I most worry about is the battery running down and leaking
inside the K3. I suppose on the rare times I run the utility, I
should check to see if the clock is still running. If it runs
out of juice, the replace the battery.

Re: Battery Low K3

Some have said that the coin cells don't leak...maybe not often but I know of one that leaked in a Kenwood 850 and ate away some of the circuit board traces. So regular maintenance is in order for any battery.

I got a private message asking me how often I had seen button
batteries leaking. I seem to remember only once, and no damage
to the equipment it was in. Leaking button batteries may be a non-issue.

Re: Battery Low K3

M0XDF
I’ve seen a number of B/Bs leak (not in the K3), at least once corroding the terminals.

I have seen two.  My Kenwood TS-850 and TS-50 both had leaky button cells.
