Maybe we will be able to shrink the batteries down to something easy to carry on that day hike up the mountain. 73, Kevin. " The most powerful batteries on the planet are only a few millimeters in
size, yet they pack such a punch that a driver could use a cellphone powered by these batteries to jump-start a dead car battery-and then recharge the phone in the blink of an eye." Sounds like an April fools addition to me. 73 Fred, AE6QL -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of kevinr Sent: Wednesday, April 17, 2013 11:33 AM To: [hidden email] Subject: [Elecraft] Battery news http://www.rdmag.com/news/2013/04/new-microbatteries-boost-electronics Maybe we will be able to shrink the batteries down to something easy to carry on that day hike up the mountain. 73, Kevin. That was my initial thought, although it's dated April 16. The level of
detail is even lower than one would expect in a joke, lending credibility that it's typical consumer press, probably exaggerated, maybe grossly so, but perhaps echoing actual work. I looked up the prof who appears to be real and his pubs list includes some stuff on the subject. Unfortunately, the one article I tried to access was in a closed, academic journal. Anyone know anything about this? /Rick On Wed, Apr 17, 2013 at 1:14 PM, Fred Townsend <[hidden email]>wrote: > " The most powerful batteries on the planet are only a few millimeters in > size, yet they pack such a punch that a driver could use a cellphone > powered > by these batteries to jump-start a dead car battery-and then recharge the > phone in the blink of an eye." > > Sounds like an April fools addition to me. > 73 > Fred, AE6QL > > Rick Tavan N6XI Truckee, CA ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Might have to upgrade the house wiring before charging one of these
miniature "car" batteries. Not sure a 20-amp circuit is going to be able to do that in the "blink of an eye", fancy red and yellow milk crate graphics not withstanding. Perhaps when we all have cold fusion reactors in our closets. Aren't they about ready for marketing yet? Seems like it's been a while... 73, Drew AF2Z On Wed, 17 Apr 2013 11:32:50 -0700, Kevin. They were primarily talking about cell phone batteries charging in the
blink of an eye, not car batteries. Speaking of which, when was the last time any of us the battery in our car -- driving not included? I think the article is legit. The sources trace back to the University, and none of the dates are within two weeks of April Fool's Day. It could take a long time for this to get from the lab to consumers, but it's encouraging. 73 -- Lynn On 4/17/2013 2:26 PM, drewko wrote: > Might have to upgrade the house wiring before charging one of these > miniature "car" batteries. I wouldn't be surprised if the article was legitimate. It basically refers to a method of increasing the internal density of a lithium-ion cell via a microscopic 3-dimensional structure. There's nothing theoretically outlandish about that ... it's just difficult to do in practice. Capacitors already use the same principle and nobody thinks of them as an April Fool joke. I do worry about one aspect of this sort of thing, though. Packing lots of energy in a small volume with low enough resistance to access it very quickly is already a concern with normal lithium-ion batteries. When I worked in the semiconductor industry one of our key products was a FET used as a current limiter so that Li-I cells wouldn't "rapidly disassemble". The recent laptop fires and Dreamliner problems illustrate some of the jeopardy. Putting the equivalent of a car battery in a pacemaker or hearing aid battery would give me pause ... 73, Dave AB7E On 4/17/2013 2:35 PM, Lynn W. Perhaps they were referring to graphene:
http://www.engineerjobs.com/content/2013/4-ways-graphene-changes-everything.htm It may be the stuff of [future] miracles, including ultra-high density batteries. Not that far into the future. Graphene is in development of new
semiconductor devices. Here is a public paper on some projects. http://www.nist.gov/pml/div683/conference/upload/Sung.pdf 73, N2TK, Tony -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Wayne Burdick Sent: Wednesday, April 17, 2013 6:28 PM To: Lynn W.
