Sorry if this has been addressed before. I'm hoping to spend more time in
my shack and I'd like some opinions or advice on a good quality boom and mike for the K3. I suppose I'd spend $300-$500 if I had to although that is on the top end. The use would be for operating on scheduled, controlled nets and rag chewing. As a point of reference, a friend has suggested the Heil PL2T boom and PR 781 mike. (He has a high-end Icom). I already have a couple of headsets and hand mikes so this inquiry is just on the boom and mike. But I would like the info on the head set as well.
Elecraft sells a Heil headset for the K3 I believe (doing this from my BB) So can we use that one, or is the Pro version 'better'. If so which connector will we need for the KX3 as I would have to buy them at a retail. James,
The K3 can handle any mic or boommic. What you are gonna use is a choice you'll have to make by yourself. The K3 will work fine with high-end headsets AND with cheap computer headsets. It's more or less a matter of taste. Personally I use a Heil-pro with HC-4 element. Used this with the K2, the FT1000MP and now the K3. 73 Arie PA3A Op 24-1-2012 16:41, James Meade schreef: > Sorry if this has been addressed before. Save a few bux, gain a little comfort too. Look at the Yamaha CM500 headset. I have
both a Heil and a CM500. 73, Mike NF4L On 1/24/2012 10:47 AM, [hidden email] wrote: > But I would like the info on the head set as well. > Elecraft sells a Heil headset for the K3 I believe (doing this from my BB) > > So can we use that one, or is the Pro version 'better'. I got the CM500 from B&H for $44.99 free shipping, delivered last week.
Don't know why other places charge 60-70. Anyway, net operator gave me good audio report and told me I sounded the same on both the CM500 and my Heil PR20 desk mike. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=cm500&N=0&InitialSearch=yes Obviously this price and free shipping was for stateside delivery, not much help to VA3. 73, Dennis NJ6G On 1/24/2012 9:16 AM, Mike wrote: > Save a few bux, gain a little comfort too. You will find many here who are quite pleased with the Yamaha CM500, a boom mic headset designed for and marketed to computer gamers. It is quite comfortable for long periods of time (like a contest weekend), and plugs straight into the rear panel of the K3. It provides very clean and competitive contest/DX audio, and the phones sound great. It sells for about $45. You can spend a LOT more, but you won't find a BETTER headset or mic for the K3 at any price. I retired from a life in pro audio, and I own a bunch of excellent pro mics and headphones. Before I found the CM500, I used one of them (an RE16) with my K3 on a pro mic boom arm, and I used Sony MDR7506 phones. The CM500 is a much better choice. And it blows away the Heil products. 73, Jim Brown K9YC ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

I don't know why anyone would spend that kind of money for Heil gear when there are better, cheaper, and more reliable alternatives. Buy a decent quality microphone boom (check out your local musician supply store) and almost ANY decent quality electret computer microphone. A $15 computer mic will sound as good on the K3 as any Heil mic. The Yamaha CM500's work great with the K3. They require a bit of
equalization but that is simple to do. Heil headsets lately have been cheap Chinese imports that break. I like their elements or their elements like my voice but not at what he charges. Costco was selling some nice noise cancelling headphones for 40 bucks that are probably just as good as Bose, which you are paying for a name. Agreed, I am using a us$ 30 computer boom mic and sold the PR780 for some time. No regret at all, 73 Johnny

Seeing we are on the subject of headsets with boom mics, are there any K3
users that have the Radiosport RS60 headset? If so what are your comments.
