CM500

Chester Alderman
SOMEWHERE in my pile of papers I have a CM500 headset owners paper!
Can someone please tell me what the tip and ring connection are for the
microphone? I assume the base is the ground connection.
Thanks.

Audio appears between tip and shell. As nearly as I have been able to
determine, the ring contact is not used at all. Tip also needs a
resistor (about 5K ohms) to V+. Turning on bias in the K3 does this
internally, so no resistor is needed.  I had to add the resistor in an
adapter that I built to use with an FT1000MP at PJ4.  The bias resistor
is also built into the mic input of most modern computer sound cards.
The CM500 works just fine in my Thinkpads.

My CM500 just came today, haven't confirmed anything yet.

Tom,
I recently bought a CM500 new and it did not include any papers at all however the headset's wiring reflects a standard used in computer sound cards. The mic jack/plug is usually wired as follows;
tip- mic signal
ring- bias voltage (optional)
sleeve- ground

Hope this helps.

I just checked my CM500. It appears that tip and ring are shorted together.

Re: CM500

Don Wilhelm-4
Al the more reason to use only the tip and the sleeve.
The K3 jacks are 'stereo', which indicates that a stereo cable will work
just fine and cause no additional problems. Since the K3 does not use
the ring contact, it makes no difference whether the tip and ring are
connected or not - the K3 ignores the ring contact.

I am not certain about your situation, but as I understand,in the case
of the CM500, the tip is the active AF signal, and the shell is the
return (ground).  The mono input of the K3 rear panel mic jack will work
just fine as long as bias is turned on.  If the front panel mic input is
the choice, an adapter to a Foster plug is required and bias will have
to be turned on.

Igor,
That is normal for an electret mic like the one used in the CM500 headset.
