COM port not working

Gary Smith-2
I just went to run my K3 and discovered it wasn't communicating with
the logging program. I shut off the logging program and started the
K3 Utility and refreshing the port list only gives me ports 1 & 3.
Neither of these ports are communicating with the K3. I've restarted
the computer several times and changed USB ports on the computer with
no change. It was working fine when I turned it off yesterday, any
suggestions?

Thanks,

Gary

Re: COM port not working

Mike Reublin
Gary,

The first thing that springs to my mind, is one of those ports actually connected to the K3? Cable seated?

Re: COM port not working

Richard Ferch
In reply to this post by Gary Smith-2
Gary,

If I understood your post correctly, you are using a USB-to-serial
adapter to connect to the K3's RS-232 port. If this is correct, is there
any chance that there was something such as a Windows Update last night
that might have done something to the driver for the adapter?
Alternatively, is there any chance there was something like a nearby
lightning strike that might have caused damage to the hardware? Has
something else changed?

You might try the following diagnostic procedure:

1. Disconnect the USB-to-serial adapter from the computer.

2. Open Device Manager (from the Windows Control Panel) and expand the
Ports (COM & LPT) section.

3. Plug the USB-to-serial adapter back into the computer. After a short
delay, you should see a new port appear in the list in Device Manager.
If nothing changes in the list, the main possibilities appear to be: the
USB input is no longer working; the adapter hardware has failed; or
there is something wrong with the driver for the adapter.

4. If the adapter shows up in Device Manager, take note of the COM port
number that Windows has just assigned to it. If the new COM port does
not show up in the list in the K3 Utility, that suggests something wrong
with the driver that is preventing software such as the K3 Utility from
detecting the port.

5. If the K3 Utility can find that COM port and does not indicate that
some other program is using it, but still does not detect the K3 on it,
check that the cable is fully seated in the K3's RS-232 jack and turn
the K3 off and back on. If the K3 Utility still cannot detect the K3
after this, it seems likely that there is either a hardware problem in
the K3 or a software problem in the USB device driver that is allowing
the K3 Utility to detect the presence of the COM port but preventing
data from being communicated correctly.

Re: COM port not working

This is why I use a desktop with real serial ports as my control of my
K3. You can get a board with a couple of real serial ports cheap and
install it easily. Then, you will have no more USB/RS232 problems.

That said, it is time that Elecraft move from the dark ages of the RS232
into the realm of the USB port. Such a move would sure be a relief for
the laptop users.

In case you can't figure it out, I do not trust converters. They have a
proven track record of being unreliable. For now, I'll stick to real
serial ports.

Re: COM port not working

I can second that.  The Edgeport series are referred to as "converters"
rather than "adapters", and I believe there is a real difference.  The
Edgeport converters have been used in commercial applications while most
adapters are destined for the consumer market.

My Edgeport 4 is one of the few adapters that will work reliably at the
slower data rate required by the K2.  Most others do not like to run at
that slow speed, although I have just tried a Keyspan adapter with a K2
that worked just fine.

Gary,

If other attempts (checking computer, ports, cables, etc.)  fail,
contact [hidden email] and they can give you a couple of points
to measure in the K3.  Should the K3 be the fault, and if you are
capable of SMD IC replacement, then they can send you the RS-232 to
TTL/CMOS converter IC and you can replace it.  If you are not capable,
you may be able to exchange the KIO3 board.

If you have the space I see no particular advantage of the Edgeport over an internal PCI 4 serial port card.  If your computer is bus slot short and USB long that's another story.

Quite simply the speed range is in the hands of the chip designer.  The
maximum to minimum speed range of *any* serial port - USB, add-in card,
or mother board is limited to 2^14 due to the use of a 14 bit "baud
rate divisor" in the original PC specification.  Designers can either
go for the old 10 baud to 115,000 baud (or 20 baud to 230,000 baud)
range used by terminals and the like or they can go for a 110 bps -
1 Mbps (or 300 bps - 3 Mbps) used by mass storage applications like
USB drives, flash drives, camera transfers, etc.

A device like the Edgeport that was designed primarily as a terminal
and peripheral server (serial printers, bar code scanners, etc.) makes
an excellent device for amateur use as it even supports 45.45, 50, 75,
100 and 110 baud five bit ("baudot") RTTY.

Same here, both the 4 and 8 and never a problem.  You just have to watch and

that was closing real quick for $25 max and got them both.  I have seen them
listed for $300 too so just wait and watch.  73, de Jim KG0KP

When having to deal with multiple USB-to-serial drivers required by different devices (K3, GPS tracker, RTL-SDR etc.) these 2 utilities by Uwe Sieber helped me a lot to manage COM ports and - even more important - to free no longer used COM ports if Windows still reports them as being in use:

I tried that first and the card from Tiger I bought didn't function right, so I returned it. Although it was just a fluke, in looking for another I found the Edgeport. I have used this on XP, Win 7 and now Win 8. It's a bit cleaner for me to plug all the serial lines into instead of at the computer which is under the desk.

If you have the space I see no particular advantage of the Edgeport over an
internal PCI 4 serial port card.  If your computer is bus slot short and USB
long that's another story.

Re: COM port not working

Thanks for the replies, some of them most detailed and helpful. For
an unknown reason the K3 began communicating again with the computer
and I had made no changes. Restarting the computer 4-5 times and
re-trying to communicate did not work. Everything else seemed to work
with the computer and with the radio but nothing changed.

FWIW, the K3 software would not connect nor would the Logging
software connect. There were no updates recently and I require my
approval for any updates (I don't trust Microsoft to always do things
in my best interest).

As the Edgeport, that might be a perfect solution but at the moment
they are $250 and that's too much. Fleabay might bring the right
price to me but not today. I'm keeping the many helpful suggestions
in a separate file in case this happens again.

Thank you all for your replies, I appreciate your time & interest
very much.

Line out dead

Merv Schweigert
In reply to this post by hb9brj
Seems I have lost one channel on the line out of my K3.
I have been using it on RTTY for years and suddenly
there is no audio output on one channel of the line out.

Is there a setting I could have changed by accident or
did the line out audio go south?

changed cables etc and there is nothing at the rear jack
line out of the K3 on one channel.
Thanks  73 Merv K9FD/KH6

Re: Line out dead

Joe Subich, W4TV-4

Merv,

Check the RF choke(s) in the Line Out ... I've had a couple open
for unknown reasons.
