CW

William E. Twaddell
I am new to QRP, not ham radio as I was licensed in 1961.
I have a used K2 SR# 1837.
I realize that cw is the only way to go, but the cw is way back in
memory, and 5wpm is about all I can copy.
Are there any real slow nets for QRP that anyone knows of?
tnx and 73

Merry Christmas

Hi Bill
Welcome to our particular form of madness :-)

QRP does not necessarily equate to slow code speed.
There are slow speed nets, at least I've seen them
mentioned in the past.
Personally, I think your best bet is to just get on the
air at a speed you can handle and make contacts.
People will slow down for you, and you will
gradually speed up.

A good way to practice is to send to yourself from
a page in a book.  Try to send a bit faster than you
are comfortable with, and you will find that your
mental processing of code will speed up on receive
also.

Good luck, 73 and Merry Christmas.

Bill,

I was off the air for 25 years and when I decided to get back on, needless
to say, my cw was pretty rusty. After a little listening to W1AW I just got
on the air and was pretty liberal in my use of pse QRS - and most people
did. It didn't take too long before my speed began to climb - just get on
and enjoy it.

This is all great advice from everybody. Bill, I hope you do get on the air and get some 'on-the-job' training. We'll definitely slow down for ya.

This brings up a very legitimate point. It used to be that the novice bands were the training ground for new hams, or even for seasoned hams wanting to practice their code speed and CW skills.

As a novice, I used to love to talk to non-novices that would come into the novice band to talk to us newbies, because generally they pushed me to faster speeds than I was used to. It was good practice.

Since I've upgraded, I've still tried occasionally to keep up this custom of going into the novice bands and calling a slow CQ in case there are any folks wanting to have a QSO. In fact, just in the last month, I've been doing this a lot more. However... in the last month I think I've spent a total of two solid hours calling CQ (!) without a single response. How sad, but there seems to be nobody left in the novice bands, let alone any that would answer my CQ. I haven't heard a single signal there in years. Have you?

Well, maybe one of these days, someone will answer...

It would be really nice if, say, 50k-60k were to be considered a
"slower speed" segment.  It's just beyond the high activity areas on most
bands, but close enough in that it doesn't take any extra effort to visit.
I never hear anything on the FIST calling freqs (usually 58k up from
the bottom of the band), but they should be ideal places to find
operators who are happy to QRS.

Re: CW

I match the speed of the other station when in casual QSO/Ragchew mode.
I generally do not tune into the novice/T+ sub-bands because I'm really
lazy.  I probably should, although I doubt there are many there ...
there weren'd during the ARRL10, and they would have counted for more
points per QSO so you'd think it would have been attractive.  The novice
sub-bands may be an anachronism.

Happy Holidays to all,
