Can P3 Be On Top of K3?

Phil Wheeler-2
Thursday I ordered my K3 and P3. All the images I
see show the P3 on either the right or left side
of the K3. But it seems having the P3 screen just
above the display of the K3 would be an easier way
to operate.

Is there any reason not to locate the P3 that way
(like vents in the K3, speaker, etc.)?

Phil,

Having the P3 on top of the K3 has worked fine here for many years
with no problems.  Your equipment configuration is mostly a matter of
operating convenience.

There are air inlet  vents over the PA area and an up-firing speaker on top.

I use an inexpensive Costco 3-tier"Seville Classics Bamboo + Steel" shoe
shelf. The K3 and keys are underneath and the P3 is about 1-1/2" above the
K3, centered.

This shelf is much more robust than its predecessor. It holds up my KPA500
without visible sag. The space under the lowest shelf has room for the K3
with 3/8" to spare with the tilt bail up. There are facing wood pieces about
3/4" on front and back of each shelf that stiffen the shelves.  The sticker
says Item/ART 811302.

I have a shelf above my K3 which would allow the P3 to sit flat.  My rotor is there now, but it could be moved.  I have a P3 waiting for construction, but the rotor and shelf have been there since I put # 1025 there in 2007 or whatever with no ill effects.

I find that my hands use the knobs on the P3 far
more that the K3.  I estimate the ratio of P3 to
K3 use is 4:1 respectively.

I operate 99.99% CW, so my input is based on
primarily CW operation.

I suggest you try it out for a few days, when you
are active on the air, in the side position and on
top position.

I found my arms and wrist got tired when having to
access the knobs and controls when the P3 sat on
top of the K3

YMMV

Hmm. "I found my arms and wrist got tired when
having to access the knobs and controls when the
P3 sat on top of the K3": Good point, Jim -- I
don't like my knobs too high. The K2/100 atop the
relatively thin KAT100 works well in that regard.

I'll play with it when I get it!

Hi Phil,

I had my P3 on top of my K3 for about a year until I got the SVGA card and added an additional monitor which is now suspended over the K3. There's no heat build up problem but if the K3 bale is up then I guess the P3 could slide a bit when pushing P3 buttons. I used some of that rubbery shelf liner and cut it out for the K3 speaker and vent holes. It kept the P3 from moving around unless I got very rough with the buttons. I suppose the internal speaker audio might be lessened slightly. I infrequently use the speaker and I didn't notice any problem when I did use it.

No reason not to put the P3 on top of the K3 and that is what I presently
do in my SO2R station. This keeps everything compact, in easy reach, with
minimal hand and eye movement which I appreciate for contesting. I have a
long shelf supported by 2x4s on edge. The keys and SO2R Box fit nicely
under the shelf. The K3s are on the shelf, bails extended, with the P3s on
top of the K3s.

I used to have another long shelf above the K3s, just tall enough to clear
them with bails in use, and had the P3s on that shelf, maybe 2" higher than
they are now. That worked, too. It provided more room for other accessories
but got awkward for positioning the large monitor.

"Ergonomics are us" in my station.
