Hi - Does any one know if a Cushcraft R5 vertical can
be grounded mounted and how high off the ground would it need to be. I've only used mine in the past mounted on the roof but at the current QTH I won't be able to get it up there until the spring. 73's Norm K9NK _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. The R5 can be ground-mounted. It will exhibit very acceptable SWR
across all of its 5 bands when mounted close to the ground. However, my experience has been that elevation increases its effectiveness proportionate to its height. Going from ground height to 25 feet improved signals by about an S unit. K7LXC and N0AX did comparison testing of several verticals and presented the results at the Dayton Hamvention in 2000 (copies of the report are available from <http://www.championradio.com/publications.html>. One of the models they tested was the R8, which is built in a similar manner to the R5. I recall they had the base mounted about 7 feet above a ground screen. The results were (in my opinion) better overall than for the other types they tested. I have a similar Hy- Gain AV640 mounted on a pipe at 13 feet and am quite satisfied with the performance of that installation. 73, Bob N7XY _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I used to have one. Going from memory I believe Cushcraft recommended something like six to eight feet above the ground.

For performance, absolutely. I think the question was how low can you go without it starting to detune the antenna.

You bet an R5 can be ground mounted. However, Cushcraft has recommended it
be 4 to 6 feet above ground. You do, however, need to consider the RF exposure limits as outlined by the FCC. Remember, you have to consider whether the site is controlled (not accessible by the average person) or uncontrolled (accessible by the average person). Accessible means can they get near the radiating portion of the antenna. I have a Cushcraft R-7000 vertical mounted 8 feet above ground in an area of my lot that is fenced and locked (controlled area).
