I get good audio reports using a Yaesu MD100A8x that I kept from when I
had an FT-920 hooked to it.  I made up a custom cable between the mic
base and the K3 so the stock Yaesu one is undisturbed.

I'm guessing the venerable Kenwood MC-50/60 would also work very well.

One minor (or for some, not so minor) detail - an Icom microphone will
not work on the K3 without changing the wiring in the microphone plug.

Yes, the non-"A" version since the power pin is different.  The A
version works but one needs to keep the preamp off or use internal
batteries.

The K3 has such a flexible mic input that almost any quality dynamic
or electret mic will work with the appropriate settings and perhaps
a little EQ.

Go with the Audio Technica ATR-1300.  It's only about $25 and it can't be beat.

Interesting the timing of this question, I was about to ask something
quite similar.

I have a Heil desk mic with element HC-4, I've had it since Heil
first
came out with it. It's in a beater HM-5 desk mic frame. I'd like to
get a noise cancelling mic and good fidelity would be nice, I'm not a
SSB contester. I have a couple recording mics but their off axis
response would pick up every vibration from the blower And I'd like
to
cancel that noise. A hand held mics cable would get in the way so a
desktop is better. Something that would fit inside this HM-5 stand
would be ideal.

Check out my video on UTUBE, California Hammin'  The first few minutes shows the MB-3K Audio Tech mike with the boom mount.  Very directional and great fidelity, works very well with the K3.

I pull my old Shure 444D off the shelf and with the stock audio settings in
the K3, I get good reports. Color scheme also matches.  ;)

The Yaesu MD100A8x also affords the opportunity of utilizing the Up/Down
frequency feature of the K3 from the microphone base.

Don't have a K3 but I am looking for a desk mic for K2 that would meet
the following:

Mic base has DTMF tone pad - 16 button if possible, 12-button OK

Off-the-shelf switch box and adapter cables for K2 (default Kenwood
round) and !COM 8-pin modular - bad eyesight means that I can't make up
these any more like I used to do.

Presently using an Adonis (import) - high quality mic with box and
cables but no DTMF pad and they don't import it into the US any more.

I wondered why mine didn't work until I stumbled upon the config menu
entry to enable that switch.  D'oh!

Re: DESK TOP MICROPHONE FOR K3

Rick Stealey

On a related topic, if you get one of the microphones, such as the Audio Technica
that someone recommended, how do you mount it?  Are there generic desk mounts
or retractible boom mounts that don't cost an arm and a leg like most Heil products?
Seems silly to buy a well respected microphone for a reasonable price then spend
a fortune for a boom.

Rick,

For microphone mounts, check the Pro Audio sites, like Sweetwater Sound
or B & H Photo.
