DM 780 and K3

Jim Stafford-3
Ok, I think 24 hours and searching every last manual, option, etc in
both the HRD - DM780 and K3 is long enough before asking for help!  That
said, I will probably find the solution about 5 minutes after hitting
the SEND button on this message.

I have done PSK31 with other rigs and have gotten some results with the
K3 (no contacts but it appeared to send the characters) but that was
using the
BPSK31 setting in the K3.  I want to use the DATA A mode which I think I
should be using with the external sound card in my computer.  Everything
seems to be connected - DM780 is working with HRD, etc.  I see data
streams and all is receiving ok.  I load the buffer and it seems to send
ok. In fact the transmit light on the K3 lights up but nothing gets
sent.  It is NOT in the TX TEST mode but it acts that way.  The stream
gets sent but no power out.  I can't seem to get the VOX to work and the
PTT is some sort of "VIA Ham Radio Deluxe" method.  I thought I could
use the DTR or RTS method but even though I have the PTT set to that in
the K3 and DM780, nothing happens on that method except DM780 does seem
to be sending the data.  That method doesn't even put the K3 into the TX
mode.  All my wires are connected correctly and I "print" stations fine.
The transmitted signal in the waterfall appears to have data on it, ie
when the characters are finished, there is a "steady" out put with no
modulation.

I've run thru HRD's forums, this reflector, the Yahoo Group, and googled
the web.  Nothing.

Here are my K3 settings:

VOX ON
VOX GN 50
AntiVOX 0
PTT - KEY   RTS-OFF or any combination (tried'em all)
MIC BTN OFF (but ON does not work either)
MIC + LIN   ON
MIC SEL RPL (rear panel)

on DM-780

Connected to HRD
I have a TX button set but it only puts the rig into the TX mode (no
power out)
PTT - none of the 3 options work

Shouldn't the cable I'm using between HRD and rig work to put PTT on the
line? And why won't VOX work?  I've used both methods on other radios
with various interfaces.

I'd think I have a bad serial cable but a friend has tried all the same
options in sync with me and neither get anything out UNLESS we put the
K3 into the PSK31 mode and not DATA A.  There seems to be a lot more
flexibility in DATA A with respect to filter and shifting than in PSK31.

Ok, I'll be back in about 5 minutes with the answer.  IT always seems to
work that way.

Jim

You seem to have over complicated the issue... In no particular order
try the following:

K3, no VOX, PTT - KEY both off. Line input only. DATA A.

From HRD, you should be seeing the K3 and displaying the frequency. Run
DM780 from within HRD.

HRD/DM780 keys the K3 via a serial command, you should be able to TX and
change back to RX OK. PSK31/RTTY/Olivia, etc. should be decoding OK on
DM780. TX audio should work OK into the line input of the K3.

It seems to work very easily for me, perhaps I've missed something that
others miss...
Call me on Skype (aon7800) and I'll talk you through the settings.

73 Dave, G4AON
==================

The K3 dial frequency should be displayed on DM780 which runs via HRD.
DM780 should be
<SNIP>

I've run thru HRD's forums, this reflector, the Yahoo Group, and googled
the web. Nothing.

Here are my K3 settings:

VOX ON
VOX GN 50
AntiVOX 0
PTT - KEY RTS-OFF or any combination (tried'em all)
MIC BTN OFF (but ON does not work either)
MIC + LIN ON
MIC SEL RPL (rear panel)

PTT - none of the 3 options work

Have you tried a VOX gain of 100? It takes a setting greater than 50
to work with my setup.

Off the top of my head the K3 should work with all three options:

VOX,
PTT via COM port and
PTT via K3 commands.

In general you need to be sure that the method you chose for TX supports
audio via the rear connector. I am sure there is a user on the forums who
can help - so far I just use my K3 as a receiver, I use my TS-480SAT for
digital mode QSO's.

Re: DM 780 and K3

Thanks to all who suggested ideas.  I got on the old SKYPE with Dave G4AON this PM and thru a process of elimination, it appears that I have a problem in my LINE IN port.  I was not getting audio into the K3!! Had all the CONFIGS and MENUS set right in line with his but no audio going inside the rig.

Remember how I said that it went into transmit mode but no output, well no audio making into the port and with DATA A being USB mode (in reality), there was no audio, no ALC, etc. and now power out.   However, when I moved the patch cord coming from the computer to the REAR MIC jack and energized that via the menus, things took right off.  The PTT was actually working fine it turns out.  I realize that the mic jack is probably not isolated from ground but it seems to work right now and have made several PSK contacts this afternoon at the 10 watt (QRP) level and one was in Argentina on the 40M wire antenna.

So now to actually figure out if it is simply a continuity problem or something wrong with the I/O board.

Hey, if it was easy, everyone would be doing it!!

Again, thanks to all for suggestions.

Try just using USB and not data mode A.  I have used HRD and DM 780 that way and it works
