David Cole & "stuff"

Elecraft mailing list

1.  When in transmit using SSB, I am getting some sort of audio feedback
only when I have the monitor level turned up.  The louder I turn up
Monitor, the more feedback I get.

2.  I have somehow turned off the NR for SSB mode only...  When I press
the 8 key, (NR), I get N/A if in SSB mode.  If in CW, it works fine...

1) If you're using the monitor function without headphones to monitor with...that's your problem. In other words, if you're monitoring via a speaker instead of headphones...this is creating the feedback loop which will only get worse as you "turn it up". Put your headphones on to monitor. You're ProIII (assuming you still have it) was no different.
2) Not a clue...I'm sitting in a bar with my lovely & not in front of the radio so if indeed "8" is the NR function...press it & hold it to access the "setting function"...choose what is most effective...tap it to turn it on & off. Not a clue as to why N/A is displaying...not a clue...unless of course; as you suggest, you somehow turned it off in the menu somewhere. Probably best not to change to much in the menu until you get more familiar with the radio...Fred's book is a must IMO.

Are you in split mode by chance with the NR issue?

I also have no clue how you get an NA while in SSB.

Re: David Cole & "stuff"

dmb@lightstream.net
If you have somehow managed to turn off AGC  (Menu: AGC MD > OFF) while in
SSB mode, that would explain why NR is N/A. (If your LCD display shows
"AGC-" rather than "AGC-S" or "AGC-F", then your AGC is OFF.)

"AGC MD" is mode-specific, so if you turned it off while in SSB but not
when in CW, attempting to use NR while in SSB would indicate N/A --
whereas it would work properly for mode CW.

Hi Tom,
Thank you for the help here!  The NR showing N/A was caused by my having
the AGC off.  I was unaware that killed the NR.

The feedback problem is not that simple...  I believe it is feeding back
via the sound card...  More as I narrow it down.  Not a simple matter of
having the audio up...  I need to recreate the problem, and note how
everything is set.  I am finally getting the 10,000 view of the radio in
my head.

Why do you feel the need to have the monitor tuned on?

David,

If the sound is coming from the computer, go into the CONFIG menu and
check the setting of LIN OUT.
Default is NOR 010 (the 010 is the level).  If you tap "1" it will set
LIN OUT to =PHONES.  That is a toggle, tap "1" again to turn it off.

Hi Scott,
I don't feel the need to have the monitor turned on.  I do feel the need
to understand what is happening is all...  New radio to me, and
complicated enough I no longer trust my ability to look and use with out
looking at the books...  :)

We've all been there, David. And my comment was not meant as a
criticism, I was just curious.

Re: Thanks Tom

NK7Z
Hi Scott,

Never took it as a criticism...  If anything I have found this group of
people to be kind, and generous to a fault in giving and sharing
information.  It is sort of like the old days of ham radio!  Something I
have not seen in many years.
