Delays, etc.

Brett Gazdzinski
I cancelled my order as I could not take it anymore,
there are still no full specs on the radio, things that were
supposed to work still dont, or have just started working.
FM does not work, AM sync does not work, I dont now
what the audio passband is (how low does it go?).
The 2nd receiver is delayed, what about the variable filters?
All this stuff was in the advertisements, nothing about it was not done
yet, or would not be done before the first 500 radios slowly shipped.

I think Elecraft is a great company making great radios, but I
think they blew the release of this one.
They should have been up front with saying its a CW radio for now,
and we hope to get the other stuff working in a year or so.

I cant think of any other manufacturer who could get away with selling
so many radios so late, without major modes, options and features
working, and without any communication about it except after the fact.

I will want one, likely in a year or two after its done...

One of the differences between Elecraft and many other high-tech
companies is this reflector, which creates expectations, transmits
rumors, airs complaints, etc. (I believe that Tentec also has this
phenomenon).

I'm in the computer field, and I buy and recommend a lot of hardware and
software products. The K3's state of readiness, delivery schedule, etc.,
compares favorably with most of them.

The difference is that there is not a reflector on which issues,
non-issues, suspected issues, predicted issues, imagined issues,
motives, secret motives, etc. can be beaten to death.

I've paid good money for products which not only do not meet specs when
they come out, but *never* meet specs -- to the point that I would say
"it doesn't work".

This goes for ham stuff too. I have an antenna analyzer which has been
out for more than a year and is too inaccurate to use due to a design
flaw (I am not going to name it, but W3FPR knows what I'm talking
about). A fix has been promised...and promised, but I'm still waiting.

Personally, I find my K3 the best radio I've ever had, I'm happy to put
up with the issues that are getting ironed out -- and they are, and I
was not mortally wounded by having to wait longer than I expected to get it.

My favorite example of that was a little Sony FM radio I bought a couple
years ago to use while bicycle touring.  I chose that particular unit
because it supposedly included all 7 NOAA weather channels.  But when I
got it home and tried it I noticed that I was hearing the same audio on
all 7 channels with exactly the same weak signal level.  I tested it
with an HP signal generator, and sure enough it was actually receiving
channel 1 on all 7 channels.

Took it back to the store for a replacement.  Second unit acted the
same.

Contancted Sony and they denied everything.  Told me I must be doing
something wrong.

So they were shipping a radio with the main feature completely
non-functional - and refusing to even acknowledge it as a problem.  Do
they figure most customers won't notice?

Initial reaction was, who cares.  Then I thought, well, maybe there is
something to learn here.

I said to myself, "Why the post that he had canceled his order?", the
second post like this, if I recall.

A - just wanted to blow off some steam, and tell people what he
thinks.  Great, all for it, been there myself.

B - express his thoughts, and hope to convince others to do the same.
Hmmmm, tough crowd for this one.  But who can tell.

C - trying to justify to himself, why he canceled the order.  This
falls into the category of, "things that make me go hmmmmm....."

Interesting stuff.  I don't agree, but that is the beauty of it.
Especially when every NCJ I pick up, has at least one article in it,
where the subject talks about their station setup, and it starts with,
"A modified <insert Yaesu, Icom, or Kenwood> rig here...." meaning
that these "delivery as soon as you order them" rigs, then had to be
modified, to make them useful contest rigs.

Yes there is.  Every time some one cancels their order, my order gets closer to
the door.  I'd like to thank Brett and all the others who cancelled their orders
for moving me up one more position in the queue.

Yes, and I get closer to ordering one, myself!!!  Once they get caught up I
will dive in too!

Can't beat Elecraft stuff.  I have been in Ham for 48 years licensed and
have seen and owned a lot of stuff!  Hard to say that or admit that I am
only 62!
