I'd like to add a desktop microphone to my K3. I have left a Yaesu MD-1 from earlier times, and made a cable for the K3. It works, but the modulation is rather low volume in comparison to the Heil HC-5 I use. What about the Kenwood microphones, like the MC-60 or MC-80? Are there any recommendations or experiences with these types? thank you for your input! 73! de Werner OE9FWV -- Early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese. Hi Werner:
The Yaesu MD-1 desk microphone works just fine on my K3 with excellent transmit audio and plenty of it. So I would think that you need to make sure that your setting on the K3 are correct for it. I have also used the Shure 444D desk mic with very good transmit audio as well. 73 from Fern VE7GZ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dr. Werner Furlan" <[hidden email]> To: <[hidden email]> Sent: Friday, January 16, 2009 6:08 AM Subject: [Elecraft] Desktop microfone for the K3 I'd like to add a desktop microphone to my K3. Werner, I'm using a stock Kenwood MC-34S with good results. I've tried an MC-50 with my K3 but the output is very low compared to my MH-2 hand mike. Even with the mic gain up all the way it won't fully move the ALC to max. Not sure why.

The MC-50 at the 600 ohm setting is speced for -76 dBm output, while the
MH2 is in the range of -45 to -55 dBm - that means you will need 20 to 30 dB more mic gain with the MC-50 than with the MH2. All microphones are not created equal, and do not have similar output levels. You should be able to use the MC-50 with the K3 on the high mic gain range while the MH2 can do nicely at the low range, but then I have not tried the MC-50, don't have one available. 73, Don W3FPR NZ0T wrote: > I've tried an MC-50 with my K3 but the output is very low compared to my MH-2 > hand mike. hi all,
mni thanks to all for the input on and off list. I have now decided to keep the MD-1 microphone. It needs more MIC GAIN than the Heil HC-5 but reports are very good with MIC GAIN 40. Tone select set to 3, impedance 600 Ohm. The only "problem" is that I cannot get the up/down buttons to work. I don't know how to connect these wires. 73! de Werner OE9FWV Bill Maddock schrieb am 17 Jan 2009 um 6:52: > I use a Kenwood MC60 with Mike gain at 10 with no problem! > > 73 de Bill N4ZI K3 sn #1059 > > > --- On Sat, 1/17/09, Don Wilhelm <[hidden email]> wrote: > > > From: Don Wilhelm <[hidden email]> > > Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Desktop microfone for the K3 > > To: "NZ0T" <[hidden email]> > > Cc: [hidden email] > > Date: Saturday, January 17, 2009, 7:39 AM > > The MC-50 at the 600 ohm setting is speced for -76 dBm > > output, while the > > MH2 is in the range of -45 to -55 dBm - that means you will > > need 20 to > > 30 dB more mic gain with the MC-50 than with the MH2. > > All microphones are not created equal, and do not have > > similar output > > levels. > > > > You should be able to use the MC-50 with the K3 on the high > > mic gain > > range while the MH2 can do nicely at the low range, but > > then I have not > > tried the MC-50, don't have one available. > > > > 73, > > Don W3FPR > > > > NZ0T wrote: > > > I've tried an MC-50 with my K3 but the output is > > very low compared to my MH-2 > > > hand mike.
