After enjoying JT65 and FT8 with WSJT-X on my Mac connected to my Icom IC-7410 via a SignaLink USB box, my radio world is about to change quite a bit. I too am buying a nice shiny new K3S. Hey, I deserve it. I should have it here and out of the box in the next ten days or so.
I'll be using the USB connector on the back of the K3S and connecting the cable directly to one of my Mac's USB ports, so what I need to know are these things: 1. How should WSJT-X's Preference Panels be set for this? 2. What settings must I have in the K3S menus? 3. How should the Mac's Sound Preferences be set? Any others to set? 4. How is ALC controlled? [This was done with the SignaLink's TX control] 5. How is the audio level for the waterfall controlled? [This was done with the SignaLink's RX control] Hope you can help. Cheers! Richard,
You will find some of your answers regarding audio levels and ALC levels on my website www.w3fpr.com - scroll down to the bottom of the left column and click on the link. The K3S internal soundcard will be recognized by your computer as an audio CODEC, it can be treated just like any other soundcard. I cannot answer about the WSJT-X settings or the Mac because I use a Windows computer. Others will likely give you those answers. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/14/2018 4:33 PM, Richard wrote: > After enjoying JT65 and FT8 with WSJT-X on my Mac connected to my Icom IC-7410 via a SignaLink USB box, my radio world is about to change quite a bit. All of your questions will be answered in the K3S manual. It is easy to
read and easy to set up the radio. 1. There is the list of Rigs for the Elecraft K3/KX3 in the WSJT Radio tab along with; Baud rate 38400, 8 bit, no stop, no handshake. PTT is CAT. Mode is Data/Pkt, Split is Rig. On the Audio tab, select USB Audio CODEC for Input and Output. 2. On K3S for Data Mode; MIC SEL Line in, Line Out NOR at 010, RS232 to USB, See page 33 to select Data A. 3. Don't use a MAC......can't say. 4. ALC is controlled internal to the radio. This does require special attention and IS NOT like other radios. You will set the audio via WSJT PWR slider for what appears to be 4 bars ALC and with the 5th bar flickering. The operating output power is controlled with the PWR setting on the K3S and is not controlled by the audio level. 5. This is handled in the computer. Again not a MAC user so can't say. You can adjust the radio Line Out level if necessary. See the info in the K3S manual. Having had other radios, you will find the K3S to be far superior in performance and ease of operation to other radios. You made a very smart decision. 73 Bob, K4TAX On 1/14/2018 3:33 PM, Richard wrote: > After enjoying JT65 and FT8 with WSJT-X on my Mac connected to my Icom IC-7410 via a SignaLink USB box, my radio world is about to change quite a bit.
