I've just completed the Control Board and Front Panel for my new K2. It has
been immensely fun. But I'm worried the building fun will all come to an end far too abruptly. The good news is that I found a project to follow the K2. August QST describes a Code Player. A small Pic based, CW player. You can download your own text files to it and play them back, while driving to work when the bands don't allow nary a signal to be heard on the HF bands. My challenge is that the SX28 chip requires a $100 Key to write the program to its EEPROM. The article suggested the author could supply these, pre-programmed chips, but I have failed to get a response to my email inquiries. Does anyone have a SX28-Key that would be willing to program a chip for me? (I'll supply the chip, code--from the ARRL site--and mailers.) Thanks for the reply.
I read through that course (I'll probably end up there too someday). My limited understanding left me feeling like the PIC-EL was based on the PIC16F84A chip set, an 18-pin chip, while the SX28 is, like it's name suggests, a 28-pin chip. I don't think they are physically or electronically compatible? Blake W7PQ On 7/18/04 5:41 PM, "John J. No, not at all compatible.
I sort of thought you hadn't built anything yet, and the PIC-EL approach could give you similar functionality for a lot less bucks. Plus, there's other fun stuff to do. Actually, the QST project, I think, has a little more message memory, too. I seem to recall an external serial EEPROM there, the PIC-EL only has the F84's onboard EEPROM which is pretty limited. If you're looking for a plug-in replacement for the SX28 then the 16F84 certainly isn't it! 72/73 de WB8RCR http://www.qsl.net/wb8rcr didileydadidah QRP-L #1446 Code Warriors #35 ----- Original Message ----- From: "blake" <[hidden email]> To: "John J. You got me curious. There is a writeup on the SX28 on the NJQRP site that seems to indicate that the SX28 is pin compatible with the 28 pin PICs, and programmed in a similar (but not identical) fashion. This means that with a little soldering, you may be able to program the beast without laying out the $100. The author does have a few errors in there with respect to PICs, but they aren't really significant. But it does remind you that you need to be a little bit from Missouri about anything you see on the web! I personally don't know how the SX28 is programmed, but I would suspect they would have a tough ride if it were a lot harder than the PIC. Most likely it wouldn't take $10 or $20 to build a programmer. 72/73 de WB8RCR http://www.qsl.net/wb8rcr didileydadidah QRP-L #1446 Code Warriors #35 ----- Original Message ----- From: "blake" <[hidden email]> To: "John J. I think the PIC18F252 will fit. I have been using a PIC18F252 with a
similar board, the Olimex PIC MT-C and have built a CW memory keter with it. The free SDCC C compiler needs a few months more work to be solid, but it is usable now. 73, WA5ZNU Leigh _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Silly me. I always thought an SX-28 was a 1940s vintage single
