Duplex operation on K3

William Hein-3
Is there a way to get the K3 to operate duplex (Tx on one band while rx on another)?  For the K3 with second rx, of course.

I would like to operate mode A satellite with AO-7 (tx on 2m and rx on 10m).  I'd also monitor a second band while contesting with my K3 without the expense of buying a second K3 when the one I have already has two rxs.

My antennas are well separated and I have extensive external band pass filtering for contest use.

I'm also interested in this operation (although for a different
application).  Here's the
email exchange so far, looks like maybe after the kx3 if we keep the
question alive.

Hi Mark,

Sorry. Nothing more has been done on that. Wayne is deep into KX3
development.

a long time back (see below) Wayne mentioned it might be possible to use the

test or try things if that would help.

It may be possible to do full duplex with the sub receiver on a
different band and antenna from main, since it's very well-shielded.
I'll give this a try. Some firmware changes will be required.

Re: Duplex operation on K3

A subject I am also interested in.  The key with the K3 would be
having the KRX3 subreceiver and using Rx antenna input for receiving
the satellite downlink.  The subreceiver IF is easily tapped to
provide signal to a radio like the SDR-IQ.  BUT the question is if
the hardware connections will allow the subreceiver to operate while
the K3 transmits.  If the hardware path is possible then I am
guessing firmware can be done to do this.  Using the 15-KHz K3 DSP
receiver at the same time as the DSP Tx is probably impossible so I
am thinking the key is using another receiver on the subRx IF output.

I will be setting my K3 + DEMI L432-28  for uplink and the KX3 +
KX3-2M for downlink (in the interim).  Of course both will need to be
tuned in freq. to compensate for Doppler shift.  I believe both
radios are capable of computer control, but not sure there is any sw
that can control two separate radios (K3 and KX3
specifically)?  Otherwise it becomes an exercise in
right-hand/left-hand (and getting the brain to handle that?).  The
fortunate thing is uplink tuning is rarely needed on FM Leo sats (a
shrinking list).  For linear transponder satellites like VO-52, SSB
requires adjusting both VFO's with a pretty lively Doppler
effect.  Now try sending CW, as well (how fast can you send with your
big toe?).

I had both the FT-847 (a superb satellite radio) and the FT-817 (not
duplex but a suitable radio) operating satellite in simplex.  Both
are sold and replaced by the K3 (and soon to be KX3).

Keep this request alive! Please Please Please!

And, Elecraft folks, if you can get this done before next
November, I will be forever in your debt (now that I have
the way to make the KRX3 output its IF to the P3!)

Although I have my KRX3 set to receive a second band
(through the AUX input), Im still at the mercy of my PTT on
the main band.  Sure would be great to be able to listen
DURING CQ's on the main band!

What would be really slick, and I may build one up, is a
small board with a relay that would enable switching the IF
output to the P3 between receivers.  Maybe use the DIGOUT
contact as the switch... Program up a macro, assign it to
one of the DVK keys (Since I dont have a DVK, those keys are
macro heaven!), then rock and roll with SO1.5R :)

This board sounds like something up Phil AD5X's alley.  His
QSK board for the ALS600 could easily be pressed into
service for this if Elecraft decides not to make it
themselves. Phil's board is about 80% there already.

Finally, I promise to never do SS with a 7700 again!  (SS
SSB SOLP Unassisted rankings for W4LT: 2009=#8 with K3
single RX; 2010=#6 with K3/KRX3; 2011=#10 with
IC7700/IC756Pro2 2nd radio... same antennas, same amount of
time, same microphone, etc, etc!)
