Duty on warranty repairs

VE3WDM
Good afternoon, has any Canadian Elecrafters sent a rig to Elecraft for warranty repairs and if so when the radio was return were you charged any duty or HST taxes as it crossed over the boarder? I may be sending a rig down and was just wondering what cross boarder experience was of those who have sent a rig to Elecraft for warranty repairs?

I was not charged any duties or taxes because it was an RMA and clearly
marked as such.  I paid for insurance though to guard against any delivery
"issues".

There are ways to do this but it involves all parties being on the same page and paperwork.
I always found it easier to drive to the border and register equipment with Canadian customs then drive to buffalo or niagra falls and ship from ups or whomever. I then have it shipped back for counter pickup and drive back with the customs documentation previously created. I have done that many times with thousands of dollars worth of equipment.

I am not in Canada, but I have done warranty repairs here in the US for
Canadian customers in the past.  As far as I know, no duty or HST was
charged to the recipient.

The only time I got a report of charges was when a Canadian ham bought a
K2 from a ham in the US, and that seller shipped direct to me for
checkover, alignment and calibration.  The buyer reported that he was
asked to pay customs fees.  My guess is that he should have because that
was the first time the radio had entered Canada.

Just my experience from this side of the border.  Other Canadian hams
may have something different to say.

One thing I can say is that you should ship via the postal system rather
than UPS or FedEX.  Both those charge a "brokerage fee" which may be
substantial.  Elecraft will have to charge you for any brokerage fees
that may be encountered.

I have done the same going across the Pigeon River Border to MN. That piece of paper from Cdn side helps and I carry it at all times when transporting my gear back and forth as well.

What has worked for me is make sure that Elecraft tags it as:

"Amateur Radio being returned from Warranty Repairs".

The tricky part is if they insure it for full value.  CRA sometimes sees
that as a value and will charge you HST on it.  Also, make sure you use
USPS to reduce brokerage fees.

In a similar vein, not long ago, I received a piece of furniture I ordered
from Italy.  I owed something like $30 in US Customs, but it arrived broken.
The insurance claim, processed by the vendor paid for the replacement which
was then shipped.  The invoice on the second one was marked "replacement for
damaged product," and valued at $10, so it passed right through without any
duty or tax.  That's how Elecraft should describe and value the radio on
return.

On a side note, DHL USA is a horrible shipping company to deal with.  If you
have a choice when ordering something from overseas, avoid them.

Actually the best thing, as described earlier is to register the product
with customs before sending it for repair, including the form with the
unit, and having the repair shop return the unit with the form. No duty
should be owed. In the US, it is explained here. Most other countries are
similar. Basically you prove ahead of time the unit was in your country and
only temporarily exported for repair.

Various country's customs frown upon companies playing fast and loose with
