E-mail Warning ...

Joe Subich, W4TV-3

The e-mail server that hosts this list is completely
screwed up.  It is now rejecting substantial numbers
of postings - including my last ALL TEXT e-mail with
test data concerning IMD in the speaker output.

G'day,

Indeed it is.  My reply to your last one through is being bounced.  Seems
like something in the body test is declared to be spammy.

Regards,

Mike VP8NO

Some of us have been saying that for years. However Elecraft does not actually run the server, so they don't have any control over it (therefore also they can't control the format of the digests, asked in another post.)

I believe that Eric can whitelist individual members whose postings are being bounced, so the answer is to drop him an email direct, stating the problem.

It's not that all postings are being bounced.  QTH.NET has
instituted a bunch of new spam filters in this e-mail servers.
Those filters include filtering on INDIVIDUAL WORDS.  For
example, the post I was trying to send included the word
"r e p l i c a t e."  It had been QUOTED from a post by
VP8NO.  However, my response and a follow-up response by
VP8NO both bounced.  I have just resent that posting with
the "offending" word replaced by a synonym.

The paranoid behavior of the owners or QTH.net is making
all lists on this server practically useless.  I wonder if
there are any offending words in this post?

It has always filtered on individual words. Perhaps some new words have been added. The problem is that email reflectors are an outdated technology from the days when spam was not an issue. There is no requirement to log in to a system before you can post. You can just address an email to the list server. And anyone can spoof the sender address so that a message appears to come from a registered subscriber. A spam filter is the only way to stop such attempts. Perhaps the one used by QTH.NET is particularly dumb, but I don't think any spam filter is 100% accurate.

I'd much prefer point-of-use filtering, so I have control
of it.

And having to login to a forum to send a message doesn't prevent the
spam problem, as I have found.

Spam to the list is not a problem.  It is not that a spam
filter in the incoming SMTP server is stopping the spam;
the spammers are simply too lazy (or don't know how) to
spoof subscriber addresses.

Subscriber white listing, html blocking (text only posting),
and attachment blocking are satisfactory for the vast majority
of special interest e-mail reflectors ... and I've never had
a general interest e-mail reflector block and e-mail for a
single word.  When a single word like r e p l i c a t e is
sufficient to cause a posting to be blocked what's next?
Transceiver? Radio? CW?  Elecraft?   After all, blocking
"amateur" would certainly stop a large amount of spam from
adult oriented web sites.

It is entirely unprofessional for the operator of an amateur
radio oriented web service to aggressively implement content
filtering of the type encountered here.  At the very least
content filtering should be contextually based and never
rely on single word exclusion lists.

Last year QTH.NET was constantly bouncing my postings to the Elecraft
Discussion List for quote "geographical reasons" unquote. Recently they (it)
have started to do this again.

Where I work only about 3% of the email coming in is genuine. The rest is spam.  They spend major money to belong to a large corporate group solution that reacts real-time to changes in spam.

Not so sure that the paranoia isn't entirely justified. Nobody down in that IT group of ours will utter a peep about how they do it. Can't expect people to publish lists of banned words or phrases either. Of course it annoys me no end when *my* email gets notched because of something in the text.

Folks - qth.net has a difficult task avoiding server overload from the
huge flood of spam hitting them. Without a -very- strong level of front
end filtering they end up getting clogged with SPAM much as a DNS attack
does to ISPs. They are far from Paranoid. Even our local ISP that hosts
Elecraft.com company email addresses is under constant attack and an
ever increasing level of spam.

They also provide their services to all of us for FREE (or for optional
donations from their users). Its a labor of love for them and they work
very hard. In any case, I'm going to work with them to see if we can
make the anti-spam filtering a little more manageable.

Please, absolutely no more posts on this topic to the list. If you
really need to vent, email me. :-)
