ECN net this Sunay VS Hurricane Frances

Dave G.
Kevin,

I thought you should know-----

The Hurricane Francis NREN (National Radio Emergency Network)
CW net has been activated and has been designated to use 14.050
Mhz   !!
The Hurricane net itself is on 14.325 USB.
The SATERN (Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Network) is
on 14.265 Mhz USB.

You might want to re-think the ecn CW frequency for this weekend
:-\

George, W5YR
Didn't the FCC recently announce that no emergency -related frequencies
would be "protected" except the 60 meter channels?

It sounded like a polite request to me...I think the FCC allows polite
requests on all bands except 75 meters ;-).

ECN net this Sunay VS Hurricane Frances

Kevin Rock
In reply to this post by Dave G.
Howdy Folks,
The Elecraft CW Net will be moved down from its normal frequency due to
Hurricane(?) Frances.  I am unsure whether Frances is still a hurricane or
not since it has been downgraded so many times over the last few days.  I
know there is a stiff wind still associated with it but mosly tons of
rain.

Luckily Hurricane Howard is now just a tropical depression and is now
longer effecting our weather in Oregon.  It is warming back up again so I
can do my antenna work and get ready for winter which is just around the
corner.  Sunny and warm today as we clean the stove and chimney.  The wood
cutting, splitting, collecting, and stacking is about half done.

It looks like the Southern US and the Antilles are due for another much
stronger storm in Hurricane Ivan.  It is setting records for the highest
wind at the lowest latitude.  I don't know when it will come into the US
waters but it looks like it will be bigger than Charlie, Howard, or
Frances.

I will listen on 14050 kHz then move down until I find an open spot.
Please scan down and you will find me or another NCS on ECN/1.

        Kevin.  KD5ONS

RE: ECN net this Sunay VS Hurricane Frances

Ron D'Eau Claire-2
In reply to this post by George, W5YR
NREN has no "designated" frequencies beyond how the ECN has a "designated"
frequency. No FCC or ARRL announcement about 14,050 has been made declaring
this an emergency communications frequency that should not be used  for
normal operations.

NREN is a fairly new CW-only alternative to the common SSB and VHF emergency
nets. Here's what the ARRL had to say in their announcement: "...(NREN)Net
members have been asked to monitor 14,050 kHz and 7050 kHz for
health-and-welfare, emergency traffic and hurricane information throughout
the weekend..."

Actually NREN members very often monitor those frequencies. That's where
members call if they have traffic for any reason outside of regular net
schedules. The announcement is merely a "heads up" that there's a
better-than-normal chance that someone will have some heath and welfare
messages to handle at odd times.

I think it's a great program. It makes use of the fact that a low-powered CW
station working on emergency power can set up and get on the air in the
middle of a disaster area to send traffic across the country more
efficiently than the complex repeater-based VHF nets or even most SSB
installations. Of course, it takes greater operator skill than talking on a
mic, but the advantages are significant if the operator is available. They
have a web site with more info at http://tinyurl.com/7x5m2.

So, it's a good idea to be courteous and avoid both 14,050 and 7,050 but
don't be surprised if you hear nothing but routine QSO's there.
